Wow, Wow, Wow! As a story strategist, I'm always looking for new fodder to feed the storytelling beast, and last night's Carmen at Glyndebourne was a banquet of fresh ideas, stunning craftsmanship and re-imagined interpretations. No wonder it provoked the longest round of applause I've heard ina long time, from (noted with great delight) the most diverse audience I've been in at Glyndebourne for a long time. My take-aways? This is a company steeped in tradition doing everything right to attract a new audience whilst continuing to inspiure and delight their existing loyal tribe. I was there with a couple of seasoned octogenarians, a middle aged opera buff and a first-timer, and everyone took away their own moments of resonance. I'm not going to hit top C any time soon, but in my corporate work, I'm always searching for those moments that strike a chord on an individual level, whatever the audience. Generate enough of them, and you've got what we all enjoyed last night - a performance that felt like an experience, that left the audience transformed and that everyone there will want to talk about, share and remember. Unforgettable storytelling, transforming Bizet's classic into a story fit for todays complicated, uncertain world. Today, my colleague Melson Miranda and I explored the enduring appeal of nostalgia in advertising, using the Downy—Rinse & Refresh | Tell me why—featuring Backstreet Boys advertisement as a case in point. Despite being a year old, this ad continues to demonstrate the timeless effectiveness of nostalgia in advertising. 'Back in the day' or 'looking back at the good old days' still evokes strong sentiments that can bring a brand's story to light in a subtle yet powerful way. Incorporating pop culture references of the past also does the trick. It's a very interesting way to use a simple idea and make something cool and impactful. There are many good examples of using nostalgia in advertising and as a compelling brand strategy. I thought I'd share the Downy commercial here to start a conversation about nostalgia or to enjoy a fun commercial to share inspiration. What Will F*ck Mizhqua Over As part of our stop-motion course, we were tasked with making a Dragonframe stop-motion papercraft animation of ourselves that included a head turn. My main concept was the sheer (un)luck that I possess. This was portrayed in a gameshow way, with me as the unwilling contestant. I experimented with elevation and layering for this assignment. I cut up small card squares and stacked them on top of each other in varying amounts to have different elevations. I then glued the respective stack of squares for each individual paper piece. This gave my character and pieces a lovely shadow and depth. Funnily enough, there were a ton of things that truly did go wrong during the making of this short animation.
