🌾 The last few weeks have been a challenge for our farmers. 🌾 The weather has been very changeable, with unpredictable rainfall that has significantly shortened the time for #harvesting. 🌧 Despite these challenges, our farmers have been able to utilise the short harvest period this week to bring in the #crop on time. If the harvest had been further delayed, there could have been quality problems with the malting barley in terms of germination or protein content. This trend is common to all crops grown. It is a testament to the resilience and commitment of our #farmers, who continue to deliver high-quality products despite the adverse #weatherconditions. In addition, summer malting barley can help to avoid labour peaks due to its usually early clearance. A special aspect of our #maltingbarley is coastal barley (Küstengerste). This special barley thrives under the influence of the typical North German maritime climate in Schleswig-Holstein. It grows in the rough sea air, which is particularly rich in iodine and salt. In malted form, it plays an important role in the #brewingprocess and is partly responsible for the unique flavour of Flensburger beer. Last week, I moved and spoke to a motion regarding the wine industry, which was drafted by my colleague Tim Whetstone - Member for Chaffey. Tim and I, along with Federal Member Tony Pasin MP have been calling on both state and federal governments to provide support to growers doing it tough. While there is clearly an urgent need to boost marketing efforts, there is also a need to focus on adjusting supply. This is simply the reality of the global wine market in 2024. #SouthAustralian growers, in particular those in the #Riverland region, need assistance to adjust, either to higher value grapes and wine or, should they wish, alternate food and fibre production. Failure to do so, and as a matter of urgency, risks socioeconomic damage not only to the wine sector, but to regional support industries such as irrigation trusts, allied and support businesses, retail businesses, and the greater community.

Yes, we do distinguish grain corn from silage corn in our crop mapping for 2 reasons: 1. Despite *almost* every academic study grouping them together, sometimes explicitly on the basis that they are too similar to distinguish with remote sensing data, they can indeed be distinguished as our maps show (though it isn't easy and there is some confusion). 2. Grain and silage production are part of two very different agro-food value chains, and it is important to distinguish them for many use cases. https://lnkd.in/deeQWtkE
