Professional social media usually entails trendy buzz words— trends— self-promotion to be recognized. Bucking that trend, I find it is better to speak from the heart. Yesterday, my colleagues from California tribes and Delta environmental justice communities showed the depth of their understanding of California water. History, culture, law, statistics, fishery science, water quality data, HABs science, and interdisciplinary work between water and pollution science studies. They are my heart. They are the future of California water management. They are leaders with a true moral center working for the greater good of all Californians. I am so proud to have the chance to work with them all. Not in order on the photo or all present: Vice Chair Malissa Tayaba, Gary Mulcahy, Krystal Moreno, Ivan Sennock, Sherri Norris, Zach Giggone, Spencer Fern, Cintia Cortez, Gloria Alonso Cruz, James Sarmento, Emily and Michelle, the home team on social media at RTD, and Tama Brisbane. All power and joy for the real greater good.

If you have a moment, or two, or hours in an airport, take a listen to this week's We Grow California episode - Moving at the Speed of Trust. Thank you Chairman Adán Ortega Jr. for the title inspiration! This week, Darcy Villere and I discuss some pretty incredible milestone events. First, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California entered into two Memorandums of Understanding. The first with Friant Water Authority and Westland Water District and the second with the San Joaquin Valley Blueprint. These non-binding agreements open the door to explore mutual beneficial groundwater storage projects as well as other water reliability efforts. Urban and Ag are working together to solve big issues, and some said it would never happen! It all starts with trust. Speaking of trust, I also share some results from a recent Public Trust focus group study. Spoiler alert – it’s not good. And we heard from you regarding our out-of-the-box water infrastructure funding ideas, more on that conversation to come. How are we doing? Do you like what you hear? You can provide comments, suggestions, questions, or recommendations at ecwaterpac.com/podcast . Thanks for tuning in! https://lnkd.in/gKyPFkHT

An awesome webinar series (not because I was involved 🙂) for those looking to understand ocean/marine policy in greater detail. This one should be of particular interest to scientists and policy folks (and others I'm sure). Please consider attending/sharing.
Our next webinar in the 2023 Texas Academy for Marine Policy Webinar Series on Tuesday, December 5th will be on navigating the science-policy interface with Dr. Sarah Cooley. Dr. Sarah Cooley is the Director of Climate Science at Ocean Conservancy, in Washington D.C. Dr. Cooley’s scholarly focus spans ocean carbon cycling, science communication, and science-based policy development. At Ocean Conservancy, she works to educate and engage decision-makers and stakeholders from every political perspective at regional to international levels about ocean acidification, identifying ways that different groups can take concrete, stepwise action on the issue. In her work, Dr. Cooley combines science synthesis, strategic communications, political strategy and advocacy, and public advocacy. Please contact Alyssa Schultz, TAMP Graduate Director at aschultz@tamu.edu with any questions.

🌊 Realizing Progress in Ocean Conservation: A Testament to Time and Teamwork 🌊 As a former leader of Protect Our Future, it's nothing short of amazing to see the seeds we planted in 2019 bear fruit. Our collective dream took shape when George Town Harbour was first nominated as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance—an achievement reflecting that progress truly demands both work and patience. It's a bittersweet moment as I share this news from afar, due to my current academic pursuits. However, the incredible current leaders along with the representation by Chloe, with whom I led POF, leave no room for anything but pride and admiration. During her visit to Cayman, the legendary Sylvia Earle underscored a powerful message: "Saving the ocean is a team sport." This resonates deeply with our ethos at POF, where we've been advocating for Cayman's reefs since 2017. Over 200 attendees, including educators, students, and notable community figures, were there to witness a movement gaining momentum. Although I couldn't be there in person, my heart swelled hearing about the event's success. Evie Sweetman and Chloe Bentick-Lalli, alongside Premier Wayne Panton, spoke powerfully, demonstrating the formidable leadership that will drive POF and our shared mission forward. The Hope Spot designation is not just a title—it's a commitment to protect, conserve, and engage the community. It's an embodiment of hope, and the event, graced by Dr. Earle's presence, was nothing less than inspirational. Join me in celebrating this monumental step in ocean conservation. Let's take a moment to appreciate the journey, the effort, and the unyielding spirit of advocacy that has brought us here. The future is indeed hopeful, and it's ours to protect. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gue3FuKZ #HopeSpot #OceanConservation #ProtectOurFuture #MissionBlue #SylviaEarle #EnvironmentalAdvocacy #CommunityImpact #Leadership #Conservation #CaymanIslands
