Think of someplace that makes you feel uneasy. What is that environment like? Are the colors harsh? Is it overstimulating? Does it feel cold or uninviting? Now imagine somewhere you feel safe. What do you see? Hear? Smell? Does it feel welcoming and warm? These sensory experiences are key factors in helping our brains determine whether we feel safe. The cold and uninviting space you imagined could be somewhere you know you are physically safe, but something just feels “off.” It is imperative that we can create spaces in our schools in which our students’ brains (and ours!) can walk in and have that warm, welcoming experience. You can cultivate a presence and culture of safety by incorporating regulated sensory elements into your classroom.

A lesson that I have learnt in The Real World (TRW) is harnessing my speech. In this course, I’ve learnt how to harness my speech and speak more confidently while talking to clients on sales calls or pitching my offer. I’ve also learnt how to stay calm and not stutter to embarrass myself through techniques like breathing and more. In contrast, "how" invites examination of systemic issues and decision-making processes, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of events. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝗘𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀: "Why" tends to focus on errors made by individuals. "How" broadens the inquiry to include external conditions and organisational factors, offering deeper insights into what can be changed to prevent recurrence. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆: Understanding "how" an event happened helps identify gaps in training, procedures, or safety culture, which are actionable at an organisational level. This week I had the pleasure of teaching folks at Vail Communities (Thank you, friends!) how to use Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to keep their tactics and strategy firmly tied together. I added a little bit of feature writing and a small dash of continuous discovery to show them how they can create short cycle times, learn quickly which ideas are worth pursuing, and eliminate “work that isn’t working.” Whatever “Team Cheese” and “Team Chocolate” may have learned, I feel like I got the better end of this encounter. Here are a few things I learned again for the first time: * Humans tend to think in solutions. It takes practice to separate the requirement, value, desired outcome, pure opportunity from how we imagine we could solve it. * Strategy work is iterative. The more we tease out the solution, the more it reveals about the problem or opportunity. This is one of many reasons why it’s important to revisit our strategy often. * However simple and universal this strategic framework may be, it works. It works for everything I’ve ever applied it to. It is highly translatable across idioms, jargons, and industries. I’m open to having it fail me, but it hasn’t happened yet. * The cat is there for no business purpose, but it DID help us start off with a mood of spontaneity and warmth. Preparing and conducting this workshop was fun for me, as natural as breathing, and was a joyful exercise of my vocational purpose in life. Now how do I get to do it all day as my job?

We've launched a one-day workshop on Putting Purpose into Practice. Why? So much work goes into developing ambitious, meaningful organisational purpose and mission statements. But, these are never enough. Too often, words and actions are misaligned so the impact of purpose is limited. More than that, the cynical view that ‘purpose is just marketing’ grows. We are working with teams to help bridge the gap between intent and action. Our workshops are not about people blindly committing to an organisational purpose but rather, for each team (and individual) to focus on bringing alive the purpose in the work that they do.
