When grandfamilies are supportive, children thrive! A grandfamily is created when a grandparent or other family member raises the child of a relative who is unable to parent. Grandfamilies include both those who are and are not child welfare involved (kinship care). As a former grandfamily caregiver and member of Generation United's GRAND Voices Network, I have networked with grandfamily members throughout the United States; I know that children and youth thrive when grandfamilies are supported. I took special training to become an Adoption Competent clinician so that I could provide more clinical support. However, I also know that support groups specifically designed to address the needs of grandfamily members are beneficial. Some try to combine grandfamily and nonrelative fostercare into one group. The needs are significantly different.
