The 2023 EcoVadis annual impact report is out, here are three highlights from my perspective: 1) 130,000 suppliers, representing 125 million workers, participated in the EcoVadis network. As we race to clean up our environment it's important that we ensure it is not at the cost of working conditions of people upstream in the supply chain 2) Companies still struggle to calculate and report, however, The number of companies reporting at least 1 GHG metric increased by 108% YoY and the market is maturing as 33% of companies assessed improved their carbon maturity by at least one level YoY. 3) The number of Sector Initiatives supported by the EcoVadis network doubled YoY! "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together" is a quote that resonates with me (if you know who said it first, let me know lol)

At the end of 2023, as we were looking towards our challenges and priorities for driving #sustainability in 2024, we decided to reach out to those in the know for their views and insights on the path ahead. We commissioned Kantar #NewZealand to interview leading sustainability #professionals across Aotearoa, asking how well they thought we were embracing sustainability #transformation and where they saw the need for a shift in approach. The interviewees were also asked about key barriers to #sustainable change, highlighting issues such as: 1) the focus on #reporting itself and the complacency this can produce; 2) a fear of change - with #greenwashing legislation playing a significant role; 3) an absence of visible #leadership is significant and a palpable difference versus more mature markets; 4) that maximising #shareholder value is still the dominant objective within #business; and 5) a lingering focus on #risk over business #opportunities is also limiting the potential for change. Their rich insights were consolidated into a summary report by Kantar and, given the need for a #shared approach to the challenges we face, we have decided to make their insights more widely available. A massive mihi to those who took the time to share their incredible insights with us. Make sure you check out the full report in the link below and add your thoughts to our critical kōrero.
As we reflected on 2023 and looked to the major challenges and priorities for sustainability for 2024 and beyond, the KPMG New Zealand's IMPACT team asked some of our leading sustainability professionals in the market for their thoughts – on the impetus for change, barriers, drivers, opportunities, and how the consulting industry can best support their goals. Understanding New Zealand’s sustainability transformation landscape is the result of those conversations, and the views in this new report are theirs. The interviews were conducted by Kantar. Achieving meaningful sustainability outcomes for New Zealand will mean real transformation for most, if not all, organisations. That’s why we want to share the report’s findings with everyone interested in supporting the move to a low-emissions, regenerative, inclusive and resilient future. Check out the report to find out how well we are embracing sustainability and please get in touch with the KPMG IMPACT team if you’d like to discuss your organisation’s sustainability landscape - Alec Tang, Sarah Bogle, Simon Wilkins, Anna Shaw, Sanel Tomlinson, Gemma Livingston, Alton Pollard and Kirsten Lapham. The team is taking on board these insights to inform how we support our partners to address the transformation challenge. #SustainabilityTransformation

Sustainability - obligation or opportunity? This was a really interesting report to kickstart the year and what struck me was how many NZ businesses are (still) viewing sustainability through a risk or regulatory mindset, as opposed to an opportunity for positive, long-term transformation. A challenge to all business leaders in 2024 - shake things up a bit! It's certainly not easy to challenge traditional ways of thinking, but us Kiwis are meant to be out-of-the-box thinkers, right? Let's apply our no. 8 wire approach to build futureproof businesses that are at the forefront of impact rather than lagging behind.

Consultations have begun with forward-thinking nation Switzerland and the EU, to expand sustainability reporting requirements for companies 🌱, and to significantly increase the number of companies covered by the mandatory reporting requirements. Currently, the European Unions Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) took effect from the beginning of 2024 for large public-interest companies with over 500 employees 👯, followed by companies with more than 250 employees or €40 million in revenue in 2025, and then listed SMEs in 2026. The new Swiss proposal would introduce sustainability reporting ♻ requirements to companies with 250 employees much sooner, and this could see a roll out to other nations if deemed effective! As a company with a green vision, Ikonic have been carbon neutral for 3-years, and our Carbon Reduction Plan means we will hit net-zero by 2038 (years ahead of the UK Gov target of 2050). With our proven third-party analysis and referenced sustainability facts, our BSI-certified product range can do good for the environment and enable your customers to have positive (soon to be essential) ESG reporting too. Sustainability leaders must work with their boards to cost out their transition plans and quantify their net value exposure.
