The biggest risk to industry is actually winning a government contract, and then having that contract fall to a strategic review. In other words, the greatest risk to industry in this country is government. And as industry ultimately deliver capability to the ADF, government has become its own greatest capability risk.”

Saab signs $190M GlobalEye support contract with UAE Swedish manufacturer Saab has inked a significant support contract with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defence for its GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) solution.  The contract, valued at approximately $190 million, covers in-service support and spans three years until 2026. Under the terms of the agreement, Saab will provide the United Arab Emirates Air Force (UAEAF) with comprehensive support services, including maintenance, logistics, and training for the GlobalEye system.  “This agreement solidifies Saab’s role in ensuring that GlobalEye remains mission-ready,” says Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s Business Area Surveillance. “We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with the UAE Air Force and Air Defence and providing long-term local support.” Read more at: https://lnkd.in/dXtP3aBj #AviationTalk #aviationnews #avgeek #aviation

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is facing a significant challenge as it seeks to modernize its fleet of Samil trucks, a project critical for maintaining the operational readiness of its forces. The ambitious plan to replace the ageing fleet with new-generation support vehicles by 2030 is under threat due to severe funding constraints. Armscor, the state defence materiel agency, has been at the forefront of Project Phalama, which aims to procure new vehicles to replace the outdated Samil trucks. The project, estimated at R13 billion, was scheduled to begin production in June 2025, with a completion target of March 2030. However, the lack of allocated funds on the Strategic Capital Acquisition Master Plan (SCAMP) has put the project at “high risk,” according to Armscor’s presentation to the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans (PCDMV). The current fleet, maintained by Cuban technicians under Project Thusano, has seen around 6,000 vehicles repaired and refurbished since 2015. Despite these efforts, the trucks face obsolescence challenges, and without a timely replacement, the SANDF’s capabilities could be significantly compromised. In a proactive move, Armscor issued a request for information (RFI) in December 2018 for Project Phalama, seeking a broad range of vehicle replacement options, including new vehicles or upgrades. The RFI attracted interest from several companies, indicating a competitive market for military vehicle procurement. https://lnkd.in/dtqxHkqZ

The recent Maritime Domain Industry Forum provided Keane insights into how the Navy is going to meet its mandate from the Government to support the delivery of a unified, holistic, integrated and coordinated Defence force. It is impressive to see the focus on a robust investment plan (IIP); delivery of minimum viable capability; less reliance on bespoke solutions; and acceptance of scope reduction to mitigate schedule and cost creep. The Defence Strategy Review (DSR); National Defence Strategy (NDS), IIP; and Defence Industry Development Strategy (DIDS) all seems to be positively aligned which bodes well for successful outcomes over time. The significant investment in a unified Defence force requires skilled resources; this continues to be one of the biggest challenges Defence faces and one Keane is suitably positioned to support. #ourpeople #ourclients #ourethos

Home Sea UK defence spending in Scotland reaches over £2bn. Defence spending with UK industry by the Ministry of Defence in Scotland is currently £2.09 billion, official statistics have revealed. An average of £380 is being spent on defence for each person living in Scotland, higher that the UK average of £370, with this figure staying consistent in recent years. Latest figures also show 12,200 Scottish jobs are directly supported through the MOD’s expenditure with the Scottish defence industry. https://lnkd.in/dQhQX6-M

With this Governments non committal approach to the previous incumbent of 10 Downing Streets commitment to increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 and their equally non committal approach to the continued support of Tempest, the new replacement for the Typhoon jet fighter due to enter service in 2035, it is a somewhat uncertain time for those 3,500 employees within the aerospace, avionics and security industry currently actively working on the 'Team Tempest' project. Let's hope that the Strategic Defence review recently announced by the current Defence Minister comes to the right conclusions and decides that the watering down of any current and future defence spending plans is a woefully short sighted and misguided route to take.

Indian Defence Acquisition Council okayed imp projects 1. India is eyeing six mid-air refuellers, which will enhance the operational capabilities and reach of the IAF. The IAF presently uses Russian-origin IL-78 planes for this task. It is now looking at an American and European option. The IAF may issue tender for this or look to tie up with the manufacturer. 2. it also okayed procurement of 15 Tata-Airbus-produced C295 planes. The IAF had ordered 56 of these planes in 2021; the first one was delivered in September last year. The project approved today is for maritime reconnaissance with specialised surveillance pods enabling multi-mode operations. The Navy will get nine of these planes and six will be for Coast Guard’s use. This will cost Rs 29,000 crore. Four of these planes will be made at the Airbus factory in Spain and the rest will be manufactured at the Tata-Airbus facility in India. 3. The mechanised forces of the Army will be equipped with canister-launched loitering ammunition worth Rs 800 crore.
