The recent paper by Cassotta et al. highlights the growing need to move away from traditional models in #NutritionResearch and toward human-based methodologies. These innovative tools provide a more accurate representation of human biology, enhancing our understanding of nutritional pathophysiology and the evaluation of dietary compounds. Our work on a 3D in vitro model of the small intestinal barrier, cited in the paper, illustrates the potential of the MIVO platform to study molecule passage and nutrient effects under realistic conditions. Probiotic strain Bacillus coagulans VHBAX-04 isolated from human feces showed promising probiotic attributes in in vitro and in silico evaluations, including acid and gastric juice tolerance, resistance to bile salts, adhesion capabilities, and a favorable safety profile with no toxin genes. The study highlights the potential of Bacillus coagulans VHBAX-04 as a safe and effective probiotic option, suggesting its suitability for co-administration with antibiotics. In a new review, investigators explore the link between age-related sarcopenia and gut microbiota alterations. 🔬🧫🧬 Chronic inflammation underlies the pathology of numerous human diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). 👩⚕️ The resolution of inflammation is an active process that is facilitated by specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPM) and their intermediate lipid mediators (LM). These LM derive endogenously from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) and confer their inflammation-resolving effects. 🧬 Importantly, LM biosynthesis is dysfunctional in various conditions, which may explain the inconclusive efficacy data from n-3 PUFA interventions. Here, we conceived a synbiotic strategy to improve n-3 PUFA conversion to LM through microbial metabolism. 👨🔬 In summary, we have developed and tested a novel synbiotic strategy that holds promise for enhancing inflammation medicine as well as nutritional therapies, as it allows for the self-sufficient production of pro-resolving LM. 🧫 SynΩ3 and similar compositions have widespread application and formulation capabilities, above all in the treatment or prevention of conditions related to chronic inflammation. 🎤 To find out more, meet Bodo Speckmann from Evonik Germany at the 17th IPC2024 in Prague, 18-21 June 2024 and... "Phytoene is a colourless carotenoid widely available from dietary sources and a precursor for the synthesis of other carotenoids. Although present at high concentrations across different tissues, phytoene is largely viewed as not having physiological activity." Here, Ángeles Morón-Ortiz, et al. "utilized the model organism C. elegans to show that phytoene is bioactive and has anti-ageing properties." "Supplementation with phytoene protects against oxidative damage and amyloid-β42 proteotoxicity (a major pathology of #AlzheimersDisease), and extends lifespan." They also "examined extracts from two microalgae, Chlorella sorokiniana and Dunaliella bardawil." "They showed that the extracts contain high levels of phytoene, and found that these phytoene-rich extracts have protective effects similar to pure phytoene."
