Globally, nearly 1 in 5 women have a disability. ADB has published its first guidelines on gender equality and disability inclusion, focusing on recognizing and incorporating the voices of women and girls with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific. These guidelines use case studies to address their specific needs and propose strategies for their empowerment. ⭕️ Women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination. ️When it comes to global normative standards for disability inclusion, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) includes provisions and obligations related to gender equality. This #InternationalWomensDay, we’re highlighting ESRI research findings from the past year that promote gender equality. In June 2023, research by Karina Doorley, Dora Tuda, PhD and Luke Duggan found that extending the National Childcare Scheme to childminders could reduce the cost of care by an average of €100 per month. Subsidising childminder care is likely to have other knock-on effects: 🧸Reduce demand for formal centre-based care 👩💼Increase mothers’ labour supply 📃Improve overall childminder sector through better regulation The availability of high-quality, affordable childcare is a key element to improving gender equality in Ireland. Access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental right. Inaccessible and low-quality WASH services hinder the realization of this right for millions across the globe. Access to quality childcare and investment in the care economy has many benefits including job creation, economic development and gender equality.    It increases women workforce participation and allows them to fully contribute to the economic development. Today, we start Gender Equality Week 💚 Women, in all their diversity, should be able to fully participate in Canada’s economic, social and political life. Gender Equality “Gender equality shouldn’t be controversial – it’s good social policy and smart economic policy. It creates jobs, strengthens our economy, and makes Canada fairer for everyone. That’s what this year’s theme, ‘Unlocking Potential: Economic Power Through Gender Equality’, is all about. “Gender equality is central to everything we do. The federal government is investing in $10-a-day child care across the country and bringing more women into the workforce. For parents – and especially mums – that means being able to raise a family while growing your career. Because of our program, families across the country are saving up to $14,300 per child each year and we are holding provinces and territories accountable to ensure they create the child care spaces they promised. And since we introduced it in 2016, the Canada Child Benefit, with its monthly payments, has supported families and lifted hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. “We are implementing the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan (https://lnkd.in/etsRVjWD), tackling the inequalities faced by 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians. With the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence (https://lnkd.in/eE6ZN4Z3), we are addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and strengthening supports for victims, survivors, and their families. Empowering Rural Communities: Gender, Disability and Leadership As I stand in solidarity with village heads, traditional chiefs, girls, and women with disabilities in Buhera and Wedza, I'm reminded of the power of inclusive leadership. Through our training sessions last week in Buhera and Wedza, We were breaking down barriers and building bridges between gender, disability, and gender equality. We are also addressing the intersectional challenges that women with disabilities face in rural areas such as multiple forms of discrimination, limited access to resources, and harmful cultural beliefs. Together are creating a society that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all.
