In a fruitful meeting yesterday, Sightsavers and the National Gender Equality Commission team discussed disability inclusion and the importance of constitutional engagement. Their discussions were building on on previous discussions which will lead to a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration. This collaboration will include working on a subcommittee as part of the Global Labour Programmes Inclusive Futures Advocacy work. Meet our 𝐆𝐄𝐃𝐒𝐈 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐮𝐦 consisting of three expert organisations in gender, disability, and other socially disadvantaged groups: - Cambodian Disabled People’s Organisation (CDPO) - Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC) - Women Peace Makers (WPM) The Ponlok Chomnes program has formed the GEDSI Consortium to integrate the voices and perspectives of women, people with disabilities, and other socially disadvantaged groups into the program’s processes, activities, and operations to ensure their meaningful participation in select policy issues. This #InternationalWomensDay, we’re highlighting ESRI research findings from the past year that promote gender equality. In June 2023, research by Karina Doorley, Dora Tuda, PhD and Luke Duggan found that extending the National Childcare Scheme to childminders could reduce the cost of care by an average of €100 per month. Subsidising childminder care is likely to have other knock-on effects: 🧸Reduce demand for formal centre-based care 👩💼Increase mothers’ labour supply 📃Improve overall childminder sector through better regulation The availability of high-quality, affordable childcare is a key element to improving gender equality in Ireland. ⭕️ Women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination. ️When it comes to global normative standards for disability inclusion, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) includes provisions and obligations related to gender equality.
