ADB has published its first guidelines on gender equality and disability inclusion, focusing on recognizing and incorporating the voices of women and girls with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific. These guidelines use case studies to address their specific needs and propose strategies for their empowerment. #leavenoonebehind #sdgs #inclusivedevelopment There are more than 1.3 billion people with #disabilities in the world, and almost 20 per cent of women (One in five women) have a disability. While women with #disabilities experience the same obstacles as other women, they also encounter additional types of discrimination and environmental barriers that prevent their socio-economic participation. Given the worsening global gender disparities and at current rates, it will take nearly 300 years to achieve full gender equality, as stated in a recent report by United Nations #DESA and UN Women. Despite strong gender equality legislations, women and girls with disabilities continue to be marginalized due primarily to socio-cultural and attitudinal barriers towards disability. For women, girls and diverse genders experiencing intersecting forms of oppression – based on social factors such as race or age – these experiences can be much worse. #IDPD I welcome you to reflect and react as we simmarised a few facts for you:

In a fruitful meeting yesterday, Sightsavers and the National Gender Equality Commission team discussed disability inclusion and the importance of constitutional engagement. Their discussions were building on on previous discussions which will lead to a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration. This collaboration will include working on a subcommittee as part of the Global Labour Programmes Inclusive Futures Advocacy work. Women and girls with disabilities experience inequality, discrimination, and violence in different ways yet continue to be underrepresented in programs that affect them. ⭕️ Women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination. ️When it comes to global normative standards for disability inclusion, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) includes provisions and obligations related to gender equality. Empowering Rural Communities: Gender, Disability and Leadership As I stand in solidarity with village heads, traditional chiefs, girls, and women with disabilities in Buhera and Wedza, I'm reminded of the power of inclusive leadership. Through our training sessions last week in Buhera and Wedza, We were breaking down barriers and building bridges between gender, disability, and gender equality. We are also addressing the intersectional challenges that women with disabilities face in rural areas such as multiple forms of discrimination, limited access to resources, and harmful cultural beliefs. Together are creating a society that values diversity and promotes equal opportunities for all. Access to quality childcare and investment in the care economy has many benefits including job creation, economic development and gender equality.    It increases women workforce participation and allows them to fully contribute to the economic development.
