Fieldfisher Public and Regulatory Associate Hannah Unger and Solicitor Dearbhla Walsh featured in today's Irish Independent, having authored the below article considering necessary reforms to current dog-breeding legislation. Hannah and Dearbhla (and other members of Fieldfisher Ireland LLP) are currently advising a number of animal welfare organisations on a pro-bono basis. This article was prepared in the context of that pro bono work.  In the run up to Christmas, this issue is more important than ever. Statistics released by the Department of Rural and Community Development show that 7,352 dogs entered Irish pounds last year, up 77pc from 2021. Moreover, 340 dogs were euthanised in Irish pounds, twice as many as 2021. This shocking figure comes as the ISPCA estimates that 30,000 puppies a year are being produced in Irish puppy factories, a figure that rises to 70,000 when including puppies who are born to backyard breeders, illegal puppy farmers or registered sellers. Through centralised policy generation, incentivised neutering, increased oversight of local authorities and stronger legislation, we can protect and enhance the welfare of dogs in Ireland. A reckless driver caused a serious accident involving an innocent street dog, leaving the poor animal injured and abandoned. Thankfully a woman and her mother in our colony took the dog to the vet for the treatment. I took the initiative to provide shelter and care for the dog, ensuring its safety and well-being. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the repercussions of irresponsible behavior on the road. It's not just about following traffic rules; it's about recognizing our duty to protect all members of our community, including our furry friends. As professionals, we have a responsibility to advocate for road safety and hold accountable those who endanger lives through reckless actions. Let's use our platforms to raise awareness, promote responsible driving practices, and ensure justice for the victims of such incidents.
