“48% of (shelter) intake in the US were strays, and only 9% were returned to their owners” - those are heartbreaking stats. When a pet becomes lost, the best outcome is to get that animal back home, fast! The finder-to-foster program model works to do just this; keeping animals out of the shelter. And it’s had great success in the U.S.! Some shelters have doubled or even tripled return-to-home rates with the program, plus increased adoptions to boot. Jenifer Reed and Heather Kalman, who are with Human Animal Support Services at Austin Pets Alive! shared strategies with #ICAM2024 to successfully implement this type of program in your shelter. Lifesaving animal shelter policy: - Do not impound eartipped community cats. They are already home outdoors and have been spayed or neutered. - If a non-eartipped community cat is impounded, immediately practice #TNR. Capacity for care? Shelter Animals Count explains this sometimes-misunderstood concept. When more animals enter shelters than leave, animal shelters can quickly exceed their capacity. When this happens, they have four options: increase live outcomes, house more animals in foster homes, euthanize for space, or allow animals to live in overcrowded and often substandard conditions. Capacity for care is the idea that shelters should know the approximate number of animals they can house while maintaining safe, humane conditions. Yet for many animal shelters, just how to calculate and use capacity for care is a bit of a mystery. To get advice, we checked in with Drs. Kate Hurley and Cindy Karsten to learn more about how shelters can understand and operate within their capacity for care.
