“Why don’t you want to file a legal complaint?” The journey to justice for a survivor of sexual and gender-based violence, particularly through traditional legal pathways, is marked by several challenges, including: 👉🏽 Social stigma and a lack of trust; 👉🏽 Long-drawn, complex, mostly unfamiliar proceedings that often take away the agency of individuals; 👉🏽 Repeatedly needing to recount traumatic events in detail, with proceedings depending on survivors’ ability to describe events that they may not want to or be able to remember fully; 👉🏽 Lack of psycho-social support from a system that exacerbates trauma in the pursuit of justice. Pregnancy and early parenting can also be incredibly isolating; at the very time where women are most in need of a positive community around them. What if a small amount made a big difference? That's the reality with Wounded Healers International, an organization committed to ending cultures of sexual violence against women and children in Kenya and around the world. And make no mistake, this includes attacking human trafficking for where there's trafficking there's sexual violence, and where there's sexual violence there's trafficking. I helped found and now Chair Wounded Healers International for three reasons. 1. Our Founder Nuna Gleason has an incredible survival story and she's a bad ass when it comes to making our vision a reality. 2. I want to be part of the solution and not just an observer. 3. It’s #InternationalWomensDay, a day that’s celebrated globally to commemorate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. So at Pass It On, we’re putting the spotlight on women and the women in our communities who are #homeless. #Homelessness is dangerous for all, but women face unique, more challenging and harsher realities. Homeless women may experience gender-based violence and abuse at higher rates than homeless men. They may also face additional challenges related to reproductive health and childcare responsibilities. Additionally, the support given to women tend to be limited as homeless women are often missing from rough sleeping counts because they tend to be less visible than male rough sleepers due to the risk of violence on the streets, in a lot of cases preferring to seek shelter in cafes, transport hubs or other places rather than bedding down outside.
