Really fun to work on stuff that you can see on the shelves. B2B is fun and on the marketing side often underserviced or completely forgotten about, making for huge opportunities and upside. Growth is totally gettable and it's fun to see brands impacted by even the smallest introduction of GOOD marketing. The B2C side is still refreshing, though, not only because you can see the products you're working on, but also because the consideration cycles are generally shorter and volumes higher. Introduce little changes here and there and you can see results almost instantly...well instantly compared to the B2B world. Lots of fun working with the Bernz team!

Everyone loves a bargain, especially Target and Macy's customers! Even though Target beat on both lines too, mgmt. was more cautious looking ahead—saying comp sales for the full year to be in the lower range of its guidance. They’ve been enhancing their loyalty program and increasing discounts. Macy's beat on earnings but cut its sales forecast for the full year. It’s got to turn around its biz while closing 150 stores. I went to the Walmart museum a couple of years ago and one of the things that stuck out was Sam Walton’s truck. He was known for never really “upgrading” when he obviously could have driven the nicest or fanciest vehicle out there. Having nice things isn’t a bad thing, but staying grounded is important too. At some point, you might consider if you are driven more by things or by impact. Will I get more cool things? Money, cars, clothes? Or Will I impact more lives, families, organizations. These Wingstop Q2 numbers are just insane. Living in their own world right now: U.S. same-store sales increased 28.7 percent. That's 45.5 percent on a two-year stack. It wasn't broken out just yet, but the brand said the result was driven primarily by transactions. AUVs are now over $2 million. Two years ago, the figure was $1.5 million. Systemwide sales hiked 45.2 percent to $1.2 billion, year-over-year. In Q2, 73 net new openings; 285 to 300 global net new units are planned for the full year. Digital sales rose to 68.3 percent of systemwide sales. Total revenue increased 45.3 percent to $155.7 million and net income climbed 69.9 percent to $27.5 million.

The NAAWP calls this another Bidenomics Casuality: RUE21 to Shut Down All 540 Stores Within Weeks Rue21 is calling it quits after the pressures of a changing retail environment, disastrous COVID-19 policies and Bidenomics caused the chain to make some hard choices. Rue21, which was once a mainstay in malls all across the country, will close all 540 of its stores in the coming weeks, according to CNN. The Warrendale, Pennsylvania-based clothing chain filed for bankruptcy on Thursday. It plans to begin offering steep discounts on its remaining inventory, but after that is all gone, the 40-year-old chain will be shut down forever. Deals will be set at 20 percent to 50 percent of retail prices and likely will rise to 90 percent until everything is gone, the U.K.'s Daily Mail reported. Owners of the retailer tried to find a buyer to keep the doors open but found no takers, according to court filings. Rue21 has outlets in 45 states, according to WNEP-TV. Texas is its largest market with 51 stores, followed by Georgia with 39. Despite the financial problems hanging over it, the chain said its 4,900 employees will stay on during the final clearance sales, according to CNN. Veho is expanding its coverage area. This expansion is different though. [at least to me] It’s in my back yard: Columbus, OH [more on this later] Detroit will be added as well. [both later this summer] This brings Veho’s next-day coverage to: •44 markets •35% US population But in a highly price-competitive market. Can Veho survive and thrive? [also applies to many alternative carriers] Time will tell. ------ But back to C-Bus. I like this move, but I’m biased. The Columbus delivery market isn’t huge. [<2M population] But there’s a massive amount of distribution here. Top retailers include: Abercrombie & Fitch Bath & Body Works Home Depot Walmart Staples Macy’s Target Kohl’s Gap Just to name a few. [of course, Amazon too] So there’s plenty of volume for a 1-day footprint. Including to other Veho sort center locations. •Chicago •Cincinnati •Detroit •Indianapolis •Milwaukee And it sets up well for future expansion. [e.g. Pittsburgh, Louisville] Columbus makes a perfect test market. For retailers to explore a next-day service. 😉 ----- Veho is expanding to Columbus and Detroit. Under a new chief executive, the brand known for jeans is aiming to be a full outfitter, working primarily through its own stores and e-commerce. 🛁 Bath & Body Works stock fell 6% on Thursday after the soap and perfume retailer said it expects earnings to fall in fiscal 2024, overshadowing better-than-expected fourth-quarter numbers. 📦 The Container Store has laid off about 100 employees, roughly 2.5% of its total workforce. The layoffs are the result of close scrutiny of the retailer’s cost structure amid declining sales that have continued into its fourth quarter. 📺 Qurate Retail Group’s fourth-quarter revenue fell 11% to $3.14 billion from $3.5 billion a year ago, the company.
