I was a last minute substitute to attend this at Hull New Theatre last night. It was really good, completely sold out and it got me thinking about Hull’s tenure as UK City of Culture back in 2017 and, more specifically, the legacies from it. All the talk in the run up to 2017 was about return on investment and making sure legacies were created that lasted for years afterwards. Many people were sceptical this would be the case but 7 years after our tenure ended I think it’s safe to say that was absolutely the case. The stand out example is Connexin Live, Hull , a brand new concert arena that has attracted some fantastic live acts and brought tens (hundreds?) of thousands of additional people to the city many of whom spend money in nearby hospitality venues, shops and hotels. The city centre public realm works and improvements to the Marina and Fruit Matket areas were all as a result of City of Culture (although some of the new pavements are starting to look a bit tatty and being replaced with tarmac - pull your finger out please Hull City Council !). The money spent on Ferens Art Gallery (which resulted in it being able to attract a completely different level of exhibitions including The Turner Prize) continues to reap rewards as does the capital investment in Hull New Theatre which is now able to attract major West End productions like the one I watched last night. It’s great to see Albion and Kingston Squares buzzing and the surrounding bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels busy much more regularly than was the case pre investment. Add to the above the fantastic memories the amazing events created and the number of city residents that experienced an art / cultural event for the first time and I think it’s safe to say we smashed it. PS Don’t we also have the most successful Millenium Project? 🐠 #hull #culture #ukcityofculture #smashingit 🎭🎼

𝐀 £𝟐𝐛.𝐧 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐎𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a co-owner of Manchester United, has presented a £2 billion idea to replace Old Trafford with a ground that can be utilised as a national venue for concerts, performances, and other forms of entertainment. The stadium is already one of the most visited places in the North West, so this scheme will do wonders to boost its impressive visitation numbers even further. It will also increase the average stay duration and frequency, making buy-to-let investments in the area all the more valuable. On February 29, the Tennessee Titans broke ground on the new $2.1 billion Nissan Stadium, an event that brought together notable figures including Nashville's Mayor Freddie O’Connell, Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk, and country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Set for completion in 2027, this ambitious project aims to redefine the Nashville skyline and the concept of a sports stadium, incorporating 1.8 million square feet of space, 60,000 seats with enhanced sightlines, and a community space spanning 12,000 square feet, the first of its kind in an NFL stadium. A standout feature of the new stadium is its plan to host the country's largest rooftop bar, a sprawling 70,000-square-foot venue that promises to offer unparalleled views of the city and a unique experience for visitors. Furthermore, the construction phase of the stadium is expected to generate over 19,000 jobs and have a direct spending impact of $1.9 billion, showcasing the project's significant contribution to local economic growth. Beyond its economic impact, the stadium is part of a larger vision for the East Bank development, which aims to transform the area into a vibrant neighborhood, enhancing connectivity and accessibility while fostering community engagement through various initiatives, including collaborations with local schools and support for small and diverse businesses. I find it fascinating how 'under the radar' the @Baird Center expansion has been relative to the potential impact it has on our region. Kudos to Hunter Turpin for this great coverage and comprehensive overview of the convention center's potential impact on the region, challenges and opportunities it faces, and ultimately what it can mean for #MKE.
Will Baird Center expansion pay off for Milwaukee?
