Join us today at noon for an update on Medical Assistance in Dying: Lessons Learned and What Has Changed Since 2016 In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation allowing eligible Canadians to request assistance from their health professional to expedite their dying process. Amendments to the criteria in 2021 expanded the eligible criteria to include those suffering from chronic illness whose death is not predictable (2022). The public has been anticipating changes to the MAiD eligibility criteria that would allow those suffering a mental health disorder to access MAiD. Mental health, as a sole reason, remains controversial and there is much uncertainty of what the future may hold. A recent review of Bill C-7 by the Special Joint Committee on MAiD resulted in strong recommendations related to the inclusion of mature minors and permitting advanced requests for MAiD. Medical assistance in dying has been one of the most complex and ethically challenging issues facing Canadian health professional and the public. This seminar will explore what is currently happening in the Canadian health system and what the future might hold for those seeking access to assisted dying.

Understand the Needs: Learn about the specific needs and preferences of the person you're caring for. Provide Emotional Support: Offer a listening ear and emotional support to promote wellbeing Assist with Daily Activities: If required, ensure medications are taken as prescribed and on time. Attend Medical Appointments: Accompany the person to medical appointments and keep track of health information. Maintain a Safe Environment: Ensure the living space is safe and adapt it to accommodate any mobility or health challenges. Encourage Independence: Support the person in maintaining as much independence as possible. Coordinate with Healthcare Professionals: Communicate with doctors and other healthcare providers to stay informed about the person's health. Provide Companionship: Spend quality time engaging in activities the person enjoys to combat loneliness.Stay Informed: Educate yourself about the person's medical condition to better understand their needs.

One of the things that Long-Covid does is elevate stress levels and create a situation of chronic stress and constant depletion. This really depletes the body of its resources and energy. So, instead of those resources going towards rehabilitating a person from long Covid, they get lost because a person is very stressed. Sometimes, it also takes a long time to diagnose. People are told, especially women, that it's psychosomatic—it's in their mind. "Go and rest." No! Nowadays, common people visiting doctors often fear being subjected to unnecessary tests for the sake of money. Even one who doesn’t care for the money part has the fear of being subjected to unnecessary trauma for the body. I don’t know how true it is that doctors would do this for money. I pray it is not true. But I know for sure this fear exists among common people and is probably increasing. This is also an undesirable side effect of advanced health care systems with too many things to test and a very complex decision making process for proper diagnosis. Understanding how the human body actually works is still probably beyond human comprehension!! Medical community should do something to remove this fear and keep this noble profession noble, so that common people can meet doctors with more trust and less fear.

Having "difficult" conversations: How do we change our relationship with that word? It may be making us desperately lonely. Currently, we may term a "medical" conversation "difficult"... then we avoid the conversation. Then time makes it more difficult. Next thing we are hiding something vital from people and their communities... Behind our feelings and experiences of difficult. Projecting, assuming adding to difficult, more... In so doing, adding disconnected and lonely to difficult. … someone is getting sicker, weaker and getting admitted and tested to death. Meanwhile medical professionals hide their difficult. Their compassion captive to their difficult... That patient, that person is often living a lonely, scared, their "difficult.” Their family, and their caregiver have their difficults also... "Provider" difficult, "patient" difficult, our system... Lonely people silos. Losing their strength to a word. Our system caught behind what we believe about difficult. Our lonely. Change starts by asking. First, my own subject matter expert. Me. How is “difficult” affecting me? Making me feel? How do I show up? How may my assumptions be contributing to my difficult? To my work? Perhaps to others difficult, their lonely? To making our system difficult? What is important for me to learn past difficult? How would it feel? How we set our difficult free or give it a name is about connection. Vulnerable connection. Often I may have to uncomfortably say I don't know how. And it stays. Perhaps like a big old rock we can point a stick at and still walk past. It though starts with you and I. After that, it can get contagious in the very best way. Not before. We are stuck until I deal with my difficult. It suddenly stops being a barrier when we individually and as a system recognize it. Because then, we do.
