June is the Pride Month, a time when events raising awareness for LGBTQ+ rights are held around the world. Shiseido is hosting events both internally and externally during June. These include internal events that provide an opportunity for every employee to think about the current situation surrounding those involved and makeup courses in Tokyo and Osaka targeting the LGBTQ+ community. Ayako Hirofuji, Executive Officer and Chief DE&I Officer, expressed her thoughts on the activities, saying, "Shiseido expresses its desire to create new values while respecting and empathizing with different values as "LOVE THE DIFFERENCES" (let's love our differences), which is the slogan for our DE&I initiatives. Shiseido will continue to fully support the LGBTQ+ community and allies both inside and outside the company, aiming to realize a society where everyone can live their own lives as their authentic self." To better cater to the individual needs of diverse customers and to ensure that LGBTQ+ customers can seek advice with confidence at any store, Shiseido Japan’s Personal Beauty Partners (PBP) who have specialized knowledge in beauty have been training in LGBTQ+ customer service since 2019. 🌈 Celebrating REAL Support During Pride Month 🌈 It's Pride Month, and our feeds are filled with rainbow logos from countless companies telling us how pro-us they are. But let's take a moment to dig deeper and ask a crucial question: Is your company truly committed to LGBTQ+ rights, or is it just pinkwashing? How can you tell? Well one way is to ask a simple, but crucial question: Does the company provide same-sex employee benefits even in countries where it's not legally required? True Commitment to Global Equality: - Beyond Compliance: It's easy to comply in places like Canada where same-sex benefits are mandated. But real dedication is shown where compliance is entirely voluntary. - Global Support: In countries where government recognition is absent, some companies still step up to support their LGBTQ+ employees. This demonstrates a deep commitment to equality. The Reality Check: I live in a country where companies are not required to acknowledge same-sex spouses. Yet, it's perfectly possible for them to do so without any backlash. However, not all companies take this step. A Call to Action: If you work for a company celebrating Pride Month: - Challenge Them: Ask if they support same-sex employee benefits globally. - Advocate for Change: If you're in a position of influence, push for these benefits. True support means worldwide recognition of the families we are part of, wherever our families live, not just where it's convenient. We don't need more parties or rainbow swag. Introducing gender-neutral toilets and updating internal policies to make them friendlier are far from the only things Vodafone Czech Republic is doing for its LGBTQ+ employees and customers. 🏳️🌈 We set out to find out what a multiple LGBTQ+ Friendly Employer award winner has to offer in terms of rainbow activities, and we found that: ✅ Vodafone initiated a call to the Prime Minister to support marriage equality. ✅ Their team of employees took part in Prague's Fun&Run against homophobia for several consecutive years. ✅ They organize meetings for mutual inspiration across corporations by ERG groups. ✅ Vodafone is a proud general partner of Prague Pride z.s. festival – thanks to their support in 2023, the festival was able to invite famous American singer LP! ✅ Former Vodafone CEO Petr Dvorak was a speaker at the Pride Business Forum Voices, a talk show about queerness in the workplace. ✅ Gender-neutral toilets and the use of preferred names are standard in their workplace, which is appreciated by transgender employees. ✅ They have simplified the process of changing personal information for their transgender customers – changes can easily be made online, eliminating the need to come out. Skittles' Pride Packs Skittles launched their "Pride Packs" for Pride Month in 2017. However, it brought up controversy and became a bad campaign example for an inclusive market. On the surface, this seemed like a meaningful attempt at inclusive marketing. Skittles also committed to donating a portion of the proceeds to LGBTQ+ organizations, which was a positive step. However, the execution of the campaign has received mixed reviews from the very community it aimed to celebrate. One of the main criticisms is that removing the rainbow design, a widely recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and identity, and also the representation of Skittles itself. The rainbow is a core part of Skittles' brand, and many argue that moving it away actually diminishes the pride symbolism rather than amplifying it. Furthermore, the packaging itself does not feature any explicit LGBTQ+ imagery, messaging, or representation. This has led some to question whether the campaign is genuinely rooted in a desire to uplift and celebrate the community, or if it's simply a surface-level attempt to capitalize on the commercial opportunities of Pride Month. There are also concerns about the campaign being perceived as "rainbow-washing" – a term used when brands adopt LGBTQ+ imagery and language for marketing purposes without making meaningful, long-term commitments to inclusivity and allyship. Skittles' Pride Packs, while well-intentioned, come across as a more superficial attempt at inclusive marketing. But based on the mixed reviews and critiques the Pride Packs campaign received, it's possible that Skittles did not conduct a thorough content audit beforehand, and caused a failed example. The decision to remove the rainbow, coupled with the lack of visible representation, leaves the campaign feeling somewhat disconnected from the LGBTQ+ community it aims to support. Inclusive marketing requires a deeper, more holistic commitment to representation, education, and actively supporting the communities being marketed to. In my opinion, Skittles' Pride Packs serve as a cautionary story, reminding us that inclusive marketing is not just about aesthetics, but about uplifting, empowering, and truly celebrating the diverse voices and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. Looking at Skittles now, they have changed their "Pride Packs" back to their rainbow design and featured some LGBTQ+ messages.
