We also need to evaluate where the feedstock for the ethanol will come from. The industry still faces restrictions in using sugar molasses and broken rice. This has increased pressure on demand for maize. The maize prices have significantly increased during the last 6 months. Price increase without considering the feedstock supply bottlenecks will induce inflation and propel food Vs fuel debate

The country has achieved 11.96% ethanol blending till March end in the ongoing Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) of 2023-24, with a total blending of 232.56 cr litres of ethanol. The grain-based distilleries continue to face issues regarding delayed decantation at OMC depots, which is leading to ethanol stock pileup in production units. The situation is quite alarming and if not resolved quickly then the distillery units might have to halt ethanol production altogether. GEMA has written to Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Govt of India, @DFPD and OMCs for an early resolution of this issue. It is a fact that both the molasses-based distillery units and the grain-based distillery units in the country have ramped up their ethanol production capacity in line with expected ethanol demand in the future. The OMCs must step up their game and create proper infrastructure facilities at their oil depots. This will iron out decantation and other infrastructure-related issues that could impede the smooth implementation of the ethanol blending programme in the country, especially with the target of 20% ethanol blending approaching soon. According to available official data, in July, ethanol blending in petrol reached 15.8 per cent, and cumulative ethanol blending during November 2023 to July 2024 touched 13.3 per cent. As of August 1, 2024, 15,493 PSU outlets out of a total of 82,246 PSU retail outlets are dispensing E20 ethanol-blended MS. During the first half of May, Brazil's sugarcane industry maintained steady processing volumes, with a slight increase in ethanol production. Mills processed 44.75 million metric tons of sugarcane, up 0.43%, yielding 1.99 billion litres of ethanol, a 2.14% rise. Domestic sales soared by 22.37% to 1.38 billion litres, with hydrous ethanol leading the surge at 51.26%. US #ethanol production rose 1.2% to 1.062 million barrels a day for the week ending Jan. 5. Ethanol inventories rose 3.4% to 24.4 million barrels, reaching a 9-month high. #Corn crushed for ethanol was approximately 104.3 million bushels.

Great move by the Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association, the grain prices in the country have moved upwards by 86 percent ever since the ban on issue of FCI rice for production of Ethanol has been imposed by the government, profit booking is mainly by the grain traders, farmers are still getting step motherly treatment on the price front and Ethanol producers are suffering due to greatly reduced profit margins.
