Check out why BreastScreen Aotearoa’s clinical lead, Dr Adam Stewart, believes early detection and raising the age for free mammograms to 74 are so important. We agree! So please get your mammograms when eligible, get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts, and head to the doctor if you notice any changes. We will let you know what is happening with the age extension when we know more. https://ow.ly/HxTn50RoHyl

My first joint first author publication!! So proud of our team at InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders and the wonderful Emma Bryant for this really important paper highlighting the utility of the InsideOut Screener (IOI-S) in clinical settings as well as online- designed to "start a conversation" this new screener is easy to administer and is worth putting in your toolkit! We conclude: The screener performs equally well when delivered face-to-face in clinical practice. In conjunction with increased practitioner education and improved treatment referral pathways, broad implementation of the screener in early healthcare settings can support timely identification and intervention for those with EDs. https://lnkd.in/g_82YQy4

#DidYouKnow Illinois could potentially be the first state to screen newborns for MLD? While New York has implemented a screening pilot that includes MLD, Illinois passed a law in 2023 that will get MLD on the screening panel state-wide, positioning it to potentially become the first state in the nation to screen all its newborns for MLD. Newborn screening is critical to ensure that children with this rare disease receive their diagnosis while they still qualify for life-saving treatment. Shake the windows and rattle the walls! As Amy Jo Hutchinson would say on Capitol Hill this week, it's time to raise awareness for rare diseases. Our journey to Owen receiving his formal PH1 diagnosis took five years, including three years of inpatient and long-term care facilities. Within a 4 month period between 2022 and 2023 alone, he faced acute heart failure requiring surgical intervention, twice. Time is not forgiving for PH1 patients - early intervention and access to life saving medicine is key. Early diagnosis of rare diseases is crucial. It can lead to improved treatment outcomes, prevent complications, provide access to specialized support and resources, offer opportunities for participation in research, enable informed decision-making about care and future planning, and above all, provide hope. Let's help support the need for increased awareness, better screening, and more research to enhance care and treatment for all. Join me in advocating for those with rare diseases. #RareDiseaseWeek #PH1 #WeareRARE #ittakesavillage
