Is recycling a "waste" of time? With only 13.6% of U.S. plastics actually being recycled and businesses still opting for cheaper virgin plastic, it’s easy to question the effort. But the benefits of reducing landfill waste and driving a circular economy outweigh the risks and costs. Next up: Shifting the focus toward smarter recycling and sustainable solutions. 🌍 #sustainability #recycling #costvsbenefit

November 15 is America Recycles Day—a day to recognize the importance of recycling and its positive impact on our environment. The US EPA has set an ambitious goal to raise the US recycling rate to 50% by 2030. To reach this goal, it’s crucial to recycle the right items. Cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans, and paper are typically accepted, but items like plastic bags are often mistakenly placed in recycling bins. Check with your local recycling provider to confirm what’s accepted and help prevent contamination. Let's all play our part—every action counts! Recycling supports jobs in waste and resource management, conserves natural resources like timber and water, conserves landfill space, and so much more. SWANA has consistently advocated for improved recycling infrastructure, including support for US legislation – the Recycling Infrastructure Accessibility Act (S. 1189/H.R. 6159) and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (S. 1194/H.R. 4040). A heartfelt thank you to SWANA members, especially those in Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and recycling communications and collections who work tirelessly to keep recycling systems moving. Your dedication is essential to achieving a more sustainable future. You make recycling happen! Oregon's making a new push for recycling? The Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act will go into effect July 1, 2025, making it easier for Oregonians to recycle. This Act will incentivize using more sustainable and lighter materials, in an attempt to make recycling the new easiest course of action. "Hard-to-recycle materials, such as plastics, will command higher fees from companies than products that are easily recycled, ideally incentivizing producers to choose lighter, more sustainable materials." #AmericaRecyclesDay is a time to learn, get inspired and take action to recycle more and waste less. Confused by those recycling symbols on your plastic packaging? Those symbols are crucial for proper recycling. Each represents a different type of plastic and comes with unique recycling and disposal instructions. Throwing non-recyclable items into the recycling bin can waste time and money and, in some cases, lead to the entire bag being sent to the landfill. When in doubt, check your local recycling guidelines to see what's accepted.
