At Simon House, we offer programs like FamilyCARE and AfterCARE to educate our graduates and their loved ones about the possibility of relapse. Relapse does not mean failure. It does not mean that treatment has not worked. It is simply a recurrence of symptoms, and like any other chronic illness, treatment is required. At Simon House, we’re working to remove the stigma around relapse. We want all our clients, graduates, and the wider community to understand that relapse may occur, and when it does, support, compassion, and empathy are what is needed. Addiction can affect anyone of any age, race, socioeconomic class, and more. As such, removing the stigma surrounding addiction, addiction recovery, and relapse is going to benefit us all. Support Simon House today and work alongside us to remove stigma and educate on the true nature of addiction. Language plays a huge role in the stigma associated with addiction. People often use harmful words, like former addict, abuser, and junkie, to describe people experiencing or who have experienced addiction, but words can have a significant impact. Did you know that the negative stigma associated with addiction can actually impact the treatment someone receives? At Simon House, we’re constantly working to change this stigma and help those experiencing addiction to have the courage to come forward and receive the treatment they need. Addiction can impact anyone, no matter your age, race, or socioeconomic status. An often-heard myth when it comes to addiction is that addiction is a behavioural problem; that it is a choice. Contrary to what people may believe, though, addiction is a primary chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry. The dysfunction in these areas of the brain leads to the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual manifestations of addiction and causes a person to pathologically pursue reward or relief through substance use and other behaviours. Without treatment, addiction can lead to disability or premature death. It is a progressive illness and, even when treated, may involve cycles of relapse and remission. The stigma attached to addiction and the way that people may consider it to be a choice is one of the biggest hurdles that treatment centres like Simon House face. This stigma can stop people from seeking help when they need it and may even lead to further substance use. At Simon House, we infuse all of our treatment programs with education on the disease of addiction and ensure that our clients and their loved ones understand that addiction is not a choice but that it can be treated. If you’re interested in supporting this work and helping us to remove the stigma surrounding addiction, then consider donating to Simon House today. We’re so grateful to all our donors whose generosity has supported our brilliant work for years. This May, we are leading a content series conversation around Addiction and Recovery for our #SpotlightOnCLT. We will focus our spotlight on nonprofits whose core work supports individuals struggling with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) or addiction and who offer programs for transition and recovery. This series allows us to explore crucial work being done, educate the community, and explore the given topic through the lens of the nonprofit community- breaking down who does what, how to get involved, and connecting resources. This month, we are giving thanks to Hope Haven Inc. who not only provide resources to our community for those struggling with addiction, but who are helping us shine a light on this important topic all month long. We've put together a guide to nonprofits who share their love, guidance, and support with individuals and families dealing with substance abuse disorders and the long (but hopeful) road to recovery. Please read and share this guide: https://lnkd.in/dnaRRQ3V

The 12-step program constitutes a structured approach to helping individuals overcome addiction and become substance-free. Each step of the program is designed to encourage self-reflection, personal responsibility, spiritual growth, and support from those who are experiencing similar challenges. Nowadays, the 12 steps have been adapted to suit a range of addiction treatments and a whole variety of spiritual communities. The ongoing success of the 12-step program is attributed to the communal support, accountability, and structured approach that it offers. These attributes make it a powerful tool in addiction recovery. Simon House uses the 12-step program in our addiction recovery services. We have found much success in its structured and reflective approach. The generosity of our donors funds our services at Simon House. The impacts of addiction are often focused on the person experiencing addiction, and these impacts can be physical, mental, and emotional. At Simon House, we understand that while the addiction impacts the individual, it also impacts their wider circle, including family, friends, and other loved ones. Studies have found that the disease of addiction can have profound impacts on family members of those experiencing addiction and that there needs to be a focus on this when it comes to recovery. At Simon House, we offer the FamilyCARE program to acknowledge that addiction is a chronic disease that doesn’t just harm the individual but the entire family system. The FamilyCARE program provides support to clients and their loved ones throughout treatment. The program is comprised of interactive groups and individual support so that families have the opportunity to reconnect, develop coping strategies together, and have their own healing journey. We also offer the Family Reunification program to help fathers with legal involvement in their children’s lives get the support they need. This subprogram includes advocacy, counselling, guidance, and collaborative care. Simon House takes a holistic approach when it comes to the broader consequences of addiction and recovery. The FamilyCARE program has helped countless families support their loved ones through recovery and come out stronger together on the other side. It is an incredible program that defines the work we do at Simon House. All of our work is funded by generosity, and donations from people like you go a long way to helping families experiencing addiction. You know, the UK government has really dropped the ball on helping people beat addiction. There are so many issues making it tough to get the support needed. Support varies wildly between areas—some places have decent services, while others have next to nothing. The stigma around addiction as a moral failing stops many from seeking help. Even when help is available, it's often incomplete, like getting medical treatment without the necessary psychological and social support. It’s frustrating to see so many people slipping through the cracks. I personally feel to address these issues, it's crucial that charities and organizations working to combat addiction come together and collaborate. By working together, they can: Share Resources and Expertise: Organizations can pool their resources and share expertise to provide better and more comprehensive care. Advocate for Better Funding: A united front can be more effective in advocating for increased government funding and better policies. Raise Awareness: Joint efforts can help reduce the stigma around addiction and educate the public about the importance of treating it as a health issue. Provide Consistent Support: Collaboration can help ensure that support is more consistent across different regions, so everyone has access to the help they need. By working together, charities and organizations can make a significant difference in the lives of those struggling with addiction, helping them to recover and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. https://lnkd.in/dM4wZ9JG #addictionawareness #supportrecovery #endthestigma #fundmentalhealth #TogetherWeCan
