The impacts of addiction are often focused on the person experiencing addiction, and these impacts can be physical, mental, and emotional. At Simon House, we understand that while the addiction impacts the individual, it also impacts their wider circle, including family, friends, and other loved ones. Studies have found that the disease of addiction can have profound impacts on family members of those experiencing addiction and that there needs to be a focus on this when it comes to recovery. At Simon House, we offer the FamilyCARE program to acknowledge that addiction is a chronic disease that doesn’t just harm the individual but the entire family system. The FamilyCARE program provides support to clients and their loved ones throughout treatment. The program is comprised of interactive groups and individual support so that families have the opportunity to reconnect, develop coping strategies together, and have their own healing journey. We also offer the Family Reunification program to help fathers with legal involvement in their children’s lives get the support they need. This subprogram includes advocacy, counselling, guidance, and collaborative care. Simon House takes a holistic approach when it comes to the broader consequences of addiction and recovery. The 12-step program constitutes a structured approach to helping individuals overcome addiction and become substance-free. Each step of the program is designed to encourage self-reflection, personal responsibility, spiritual growth, and support from those who are experiencing similar challenges. Nowadays, the 12 steps have been adapted to suit a range of addiction treatments and a whole variety of spiritual communities. The ongoing success of the 12-step program is attributed to the communal support, accountability, and structured approach that it offers. At Simon House, we offer programs like FamilyCARE and AfterCARE to educate our graduates and their loved ones about the possibility of relapse. Relapse does not mean failure. It does not mean that treatment has not worked. It is simply a recurrence of symptoms, and like any other chronic illness, treatment is required. It's a heartbreaking reality that in their darkest moments of grief, these families can become targets of what we call "grief predators." 🦈 Grief predators are unscrupulous individuals and rehab facilities that prey on the vulnerability of grieving families. They manipulate their emotions and exploit their grief to further their own agendas, often at the expense of the families' well-being. 🚫 Specifically in the realm of addiction treatment and overdoses, these predators take advantage of families who are desperately seeking help for their loved ones. They use their grief as a tool to convince them to donate money or share their stories, open nonprofits, do fundraising etc. all under the guise of supporting others struggling with addiction. 🎯 However, the sad truth is that these actions often only serve the interests of these rehab facilities and organizations. Instead of genuinely helping those in need, they contribute to the cycle of suffering that initially caused the families' grief. It's a heartbreaking betrayal that compounds their pain and prolongs their healing process. 🌟 Our mission is to raise awareness about this issue and protect grieving families from falling victim to these predatory practices. We believe that families should be supported and empowered during their healing journey, not exploited for personal gain. ✨ If you or someone you know has experienced this type of exploitation, we encourage you to share your story and raise awareness. Today, on Black Balloon Day, we come together to reflect on the lives tragically lost to the grip of addiction. Each black balloon represents a story cut short, a loved one dearly missed. But amidst our grief, we also stand united in our resolve to combat this crisis. It's a day not just for remembrance, but for action. Let's raise awareness about the resources available to those struggling with addiction and their families. From hotlines providing immediate support to local rehabilitation centers offering compassionate care, there are lifelines waiting to be embraced. Together, let's advocate for expanded access to treatment, destigmatize seeking help, and foster communities of understanding and support. By sharing resources, educating ourselves and others, and extending a compassionate hand, we can help prevent further tragedies and offer hope to those in need. If you or someone you know is battling addiction, don't hesitate to reach out for help. If we truly want whole family recovery, we really do need to ensure every member of the family gets help. After a couple of decades doing this work, I can honestly say that #children ARE ALWAYS affected by a parent/carer or even sibling's #addiction within the home. Families do their best to protect children, but this usually involved a lot of secrets and lies, which unintentionally makes things a lot worse. This is what I recommend... 👉 Open and honest explanation with the children in an age-appropriate manner. 👉 Keeping the communication open and checking in after crisis or even just in general to see how they feel and what they need. 👉 Ideally, an agreement that the person using substances is not intoxicated in the home or around the children. 👉 Let school/nursery know what's going on at home, so they can keep an eye on the children and notice if they need any extra support. If it's affecting one or more adults, it's affecting the kids. 👉 Professional support is sometimes needed via charities, local drug and alcohol family support, CAMHS or private support. Schools are great at knowing what's available in the locality. 👉 An Early Help Assessment (EHA) for children affected by addiction is a process aimed at identifying and addressing the needs of children and their families at an early stage to prevent issues from escalating from living with family addiction. These example will go a long way to mitigating the risks of living with family addiction. I know these options can feel really scary, but, believe me, it's a lot less scary to have a few difficult conversations as early as possible, than children growing into adults and being affected for their whole lives. It is not worth waiting for someone to change. That is a bad strategy. If addiction is affecting the family, message me for help. Help the children.
