Striking a balance between work and family life has always been a challenge, but it seems even more so in today's fast-paced world. Let's take a quick look at how things have changed over the last century and what the future might hold. Last Century's Society: * Clearer Divide: The traditional workplace meant a physical separation between work and family life. This offered a distinct sense of "off-time" for families to connect and recharge. * Family Roles: Societal norms often dictated rigid family roles. Men were typically the breadwinners, while women shouldered most childcare and domestic responsibilities. Modern Life: * Blurring Boundaries: Technology has eroded the separation between work and personal life. With constant connectivity, work can easily intrude into family time, and vice versa. * Shifting Roles: There's a greater emphasis on shared responsibility within families. Dads are more involved in childcare, and many families have dual-income earners. Future of Work-Life Balance: * Flexible Work Arrangements: The future of work might see a rise in remote work options and flexible hours, allowing for better integration of work and family life. * Focus on Well-being: Hopefully, companies will prioritize employee well-being, encouraging breaks, time off, and a healthy work-life balance. Ultimately, achieving a healthy balance is about setting boundaries, clear communication, and prioritizing what matters most to you and your family. Ken Coleman posts great content on leadership, career coaching and helping employers understand their employees better. In his post, he says, “What people really mean when they use the phrase 'work-life balance' is: do they have the freedom to take care of what they need to take care of when they need to?” What does #worklifebalance mean to you?

There is no such thing as true balance when it comes to juggling work and life. What people really mean when they use the phrase 'work-life balance' is: do they have the freedom to take care of what they need to take care of when they need to? As a boss, have you given them the space to take care of personal situations that come up or leave early to pick up their kids from school when childcare falls through? Do you let them flex in late or flex out early if they have a doctor's appointment they need to go to? If you give your employees the freedom to have some balance, this will create value for them. As a result, their trust in you will increase and so will their loyalty. Do you feel like your employer gives you this kind of freedom? Striking Balance When Life Calls 🏠👩⚕️💼 Juggling motherhood with a career takes agility, especially on days like today— my daughter's ill and needs me home. This is where flexible working isn't just a perk; it's a necessity. In today's post, I want to highlight how flexible working arrangements are a lifeline for working mothers. It's not just about better work-life balance but also about ensuring we don't miss out on career opportunities while we meet the demands of parenthood. Flexible hours and remote/hybrid working allow us to adapt swiftly to the unexpected without compromising our professional responsibilities. It's about being present for those essential parenting moments and still meeting deadlines. Without it, the challenge of simultaneously being an attentive parent and a dedicated professional becomes significantly tougher. Moreover, this isn't just about personal benefit. Businesses, too, gain from a flexible workforce. Studies in the UK have shown that flexible workers are often more productive, happier, and more loyal to their employers. And let's not forget the diversity it brings to the workplace is invaluable. In our evolving work culture, flexible working should be considered a standard rather than a special arrangement. It's about time we bridge the gap and make inclusivity and adaptability the norm. The truth is, the need for flexibility isn't going anywhere. Rather, it's becoming increasingly critical to modern family dynamics and career progression for many. So let's champion for workplaces across all sectors to normalise flexibility. Let's prioritize both the health of our families and the continuity of our careers. Because, at the end of the day, a workforce that can pivot to life's rhythm is the bedrock of a thriving society. What are you thoughts?? #FlexibleWorking #WorkingMoms #WorkLifeBalance

October is National Work and Family Month, a time not just for employees to examine and adjust their work/life balance, but also to encourage employers to create a healthy work environment that acknowledges that people have many roles outside of work, like parent, caregiver, and kids soccer coach. Offering flexible hours and other family-friendly policies is actually good for business. People who feel like they are valued and don’t feel pressured to choose between work and family are more productive at work and it’s a good way to attract new talent. #WorkLifeBalance #WorkAndFamilyMonth #HealthyWorkEnvironment [ALT Text: Photograph of a mother working at a table with a laptop in front of her.
