We had a great time talking about #sustainability and tech during the Corporate Innovation Summit organized by 1871 in the frame of TechChicago Week. Most participants saw regulation as a big driver of the sustainability agenda in corporates. What definitely helps, is the drive from the top - and sustainability should be part of their business strategy, not just an after-thought. What is key is clear communication from the top, and, transparency between departments within corporates. Make sure accountability is set. Critical is to have the right data to measure sustainability at large - but what is the right data, do all departments within the corporate have the same definition of that data, and are suppliers using that same definition of data? Going it alone therefore, doesn’t feel good. Corporates want coalitions in a pre-competitive manner to move the agenda forward. A good start is working with customers and suppliers to increase #innovation in sustainability - a few great use cases were shared. When it comes to #startups, too many corporates see founders who don’t understand the corporate’s problem. Corporates want founders who solve real problems and who are thought leaders in sustainability. Corporates are open to #pilot their tech but want certainty about the ability to scale. As often the case, time was too short to cover more topics. It was however a good use of our time forging new relationships. Thanks to my co-hosts Maxine Roman, Ph.D. , Ame Igharo and Kalindi Parikh. And thanks to 1871 for organizing the event.

Purpose first, process second. The BCG 2024 Innovative Companies Report highlights the disconnect between strategy and execution across industries, which I believe to be broader issue than just the problems it causes with innovation. Over half the sample companies claimed that an unclear or overly broad strategy was a barrier to innovation, but this can easily affect every aspect of the organization. When asked about the actions they intended to take, the focus was on efficiency rather than clarity of purpose through a well-articulated strategy. Efficiency without strategy means doing the wrong things well. Start with the right actions, then focus on doing them efficiently. Shoutout to Amy MacDougall (Hurwitz), Ph.D. who co-authored the paper. Great insights and a worthwhile read!

Open Innovation: the 5 R Framework Here are the 5 commandments of an Open Innovation Manager. ▶ Relevance (internal and external): you need to communicate the value you provide, both outside and inside the company ▶ Rejection: you need to navigate through rejections and find alternative ways to get things done ▶ Resilience: you need to survive reorg, averse market conditions, ... ▶ Returns: you need to show results, starting with quick wins ▶ Repeatability: you need to produce results at scale This is the amazing wrapup made by Prof. Ricardo Perez Garrido of IE Business School of the Mind the Bridge Scaleup Summit CIO Panel discussion I had with Diego Díaz Pilas, Irene Gomez, Giorgio Veronesi, Rafael Fernandez, Telmo Pérez Luaces and Sandra Blázquez Borrás. Having a market-leading position brings privileges and responsibilities. Leading corporations should set the innovation bar within their competitive markets instead of simply following trends. Any company risks being “𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵” within a few years. But when technology changes so fast, how can you ensure your company is 𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯? Allocating enough resources and enabling the right talent is a good start, but more is needed to ensure a continuous approach to Corporate Innovation. ⏩ We created a 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in large organizations. These are all the right questions your innovation teams should ask themselves periodically. Leading companies such as VERBUND AG, STRABAG, and ANDRITZ have spearheaded their Corporate Innovation efforts.
