Sickness absence due to mental illness is soaring, rates of mental health difficulties are increasing, and already overstretched services are struggling to meet rising demands. We are joining with the Centre for Mental Health to call on MPs and parliamentary candidates to help build #AMentallyHealthierNation. Preventing the onset of mental health conditions has never been more important. There is growing evidence about ways to protect people’s mental health and wellbeing. Today, Beyond Blue joined with EverymindAU, Prevention United, Public Health Australia and the Manna Institute to call for a greater focus on prevention. By working together to address the underlying root causes of distress we can improve the mental wellbeing of everyone in Australia.

TLDR: Everyone should prioritize their mental health just as they do their physical health. While I may sometimes skip weight training sessions for a few weeks if my work schedule gets too hectic (even though a gym session for me is the easiest way to unwind and reset after a tough day), I always make time daily for a 10-minute meditation session using my Calm meditation app. I even paid for a lifetime membership back in 2019 during my PhD days, when evaluating my monthly stipend made me rethink this decision over and over. Today, I can confidently say that it has been the best investment I have made. Even a brief meditation break of just 2 minutes helps me significantly alleviate my daily stress levels and refresh my mind, thereby helping me tackle the next task with renewed focus. Lastly, it’s important to make efficient use of all available mental health care resources at your disposal. At the very least, please consider reaching out to your loved ones and close friends if you’re facing mental health challenges. While it may seem difficult at the moment, sharing and seeking support can make a significant difference and help you appreciate the gift of life. #MentalHealthWeek #MentalHealth

It's great to see Beyond Blue, Prevention United, Public Health Australia and Manna Institute advocating for increased government investment into the prevention of mental health conditions. This is also critically important for eating disorders. Eating disorders now impact 1.1 million Australians and less than one in three (30%) of those affected seek help. If the growing number of people with an eating disorder accessed the care they need, the health system would crash. Investment in prevention is needed to reduce the prevalence of eating disorders, limit the number of people reaching the point of needing acute care and resolve what the Federal Health Minister has acknowledged is a health crisis. That’s why Butterfly is calling on the Federal Government to commit to an ongoing, annual, $12 million funding for universal #HealthPromotion and #prevention programs across Australia to stem the growing prevalence and cost of #EatingDisorders.
