I want to be a Group Process Facilitator! Where do I start! If I have to learn process facilitation with deeper insights about how and why it works! What role do I need to play as a Facilitator! What behavioural changes I need to make! What skillsets are essential to be a Group Process Facilitator! How do I integrate them in business applications and my professional deliveries! I am endowed with a Green thumb, from childhood! Therefore by choice I am always in the middle of plants and gardening! Once I decided to try my hand with Succulents and Cacti, first attempt was a misrable failure, 2nd attempt was again the same story! I wondered, I am the person with green thumb! I understand plants! I nurture and grow them at will, then why am I failing with Succulents! I realized that it is a different ball game with different rules with a different ways of doing things! I need to Not Do many things consciously! Well, an experimenter in me set out to learn this new ways of keeping cactie and succulents and after rigorous study and understanding and experimentation and letting go of my "I know plants" knowledge bubble, I finally succeeded with Succulents! One major realization was "Less is good and enough" with succulents. Second realization was they (succulents) know how and what of their needs, as a gardner just do not disturb their Process! Be present yet actively invisible! Somewhat similar happens with Group Process Facilitation, a typical trainer attempt to see and do things with a perspective of previously achieved excellence and superficial bits n pieces of process facilitation knowledge and then inevitable happens and facilitation gets defeated! In the absence of authentic mirror, (feedback) many don't even realize they have expertly killed facilitation! What one need to do is to be present to a new possibility with an unconditional presence to soake in a new and authentic foundational knowledge like a sponge and then make sense of it in your own contextual applications. As a technical manager facilitating workshops, you can choose from 3 different approaches I think about this a lot: can you be a manager and a workshop facilitator at the same time? When I use facilitation as a skill as part of my managerial role, I deal with 3 situations: 1️⃣ I don't know much about the topic of the workshop. This means that I focus entirely on helping the group come to their own conclusions. This doesn't happen very often as a technical manager, but I might be involved in discussing an unfamiliar business area or helping a colleague facilitate a workshop. 2️⃣ I know the subject and understand the problems a workshop needs to address. The issues are usually technical in nature. The workshop structure can therefore incorporate my expertise to come up with a specific workshop design (rather than a more generic approach). This is the most common scenario for facilitating a workshop in my role. 3️⃣ I'm invested in the outcome. Maybe there's already a direction from the company. Or I have already made up my mind about the way forward. If everything has already been decided, there's no point in facilitating a workshop. (That's called a training or information session.) However, there are often parts of the solution where I'm flexible. Perhaps the what is clear, but not the how. Investing in my facilitation skills as a manager was the best decision I ever made. I call it a superpower. But you have to be open to different outcomes. And if I'm too invested in a topic, I'm glad I can call on Andreas Lehner to bring in an expert facilitator.

I used to think that my responsibility as a facilitator was to bring clarity, to explain everything so make sure that everyone "got it". In doing so, I would sometimes go into lengthy explanations, descriptions and checking for understanding at every step and... by the time we would start the activity I had already lost half of the participants. Now, I have come to realise that my work as a facilitator is to bring in deliberate confusion. That may sound like nonsense to you, but still - when everything is already worked out at the start of the session, when I'm the one who bring clarity... where's the responsibility for the success of our endeavour? How do I leave space for people to start owning the work? Furthermore, by being vague enough, I can also make apparent that I don't have the full picture, and that we need everyone's perspective to reach a common solution! So how does that work in our own work context? How can we create space for people to express their concerns, their doubts openly without fear of retribution? How can we tweak our activities from cringe-worthy to useful? And where is the value in ditching "icebreakers" in favour of "opening activities" - and what's the difference? Oh, and what about the reflection about our practice, noticing that we've been doing cringeworthy stuff because others have done it before us... becoming aware of our facilitator's posture is critical to getting the group with us right from the start, is it not? Today was the start of the #Kishotenketsu facilitation learning cohort at Vinted, and what a delight to start exploring the boundaries of facilitation together with a group of highly engaged Engineering Managers! Even though we ran "only" three activities during this half-day, we explored different ways to tweak them and adapt them to maximise impact in different contexts. One thing that surprised me was that the announcement that there would be homework during this track was met with delight. Then again, what's the point in engaging with a facilitation learning track if we don't experiment in-between the sessions? The post highlights how text messaging/SMS has the power to meet students and learners where they're at without compromising the mentor/coach relationship.
