Well, the data originates from satellites maintained by various private companies and governments, like Google and the U.S. Federal Government. They capture not just images but spectral imaging data, which can be used for vegetation monitoring and a host of other calculations.
Being able to monitor changes across growing seasons, right from their desks, farmers are empowered to take precise actions, such as delivering water to match evapotranspiration levels in crops. The technology is continuously evolving, with spatial resolutions nearing levels closer to square centimeter resolutions.
By combining on-the-ground monitoring points with satellite imagery data, known as remote sensing, we can estimate conditions in locations where no on-the-ground measurement was taken. One notable application of this is precision agriculture. Using this, farmers can better allocate scarce resources, enhancing both profitability and sustainability.
