IDDRI and the Deep Decarbonization Pathways initiative are supporting for several years a higher visibility of this question in the international climate agenda and an organisation of the dialogue informed by national and sectoral transition analyses, including shippers and industrial development and trade policy makers. Our analysis shows that: 1. Current objectives and measures in Nationally Determined Contributions related to the sustainable transition of the mobility of goods and materials are largely overlooked and very limited compared to measures for the transition of the mobility of people. 2. Most freight-related targeted transformations are focused on the development of low-carbon fuels and vehicles, such as advanced biofuels or low-carbon electricity and the reduction of vehicle fuel consumption. While this shift away from fossil fuel use in freight transport is necessary, it is not a silver bullet. 3. Such energy-centered approach often neglects important options for a sustainable transition. The development of infrastructures and incentives for rail, waterways, and coastal logistics is for example critical to avoid a path dependency towards road logistics and to reduce the transition pressure on the energy system. The shift in industrial and consumption systems towards less resource-intensive, circular and local economies is also critical to continue develop while moderating the transport demand and kilometers travelled. Global freight transport is increasingly both a cause and casualty of climate change. Freight is today responsible for more than 40% of CO2 from the transport sector with additional emissions arising from logistic services like warehousing and terminals. Meanwhile climate change is increasingly causing disruptions and cost hikes to transport and trade flows as well as to the delivery of daily necessities, bringing severe harm especially to low-income and other vulnerable groups in the Global South. Transforming freight transport and logistics is therefore crucial for reducing global energy consumption and emissions and will also be a key lever to boosting local production, jobs, tax revenues, and resilience to shocks at local and global levels. Transforming freight transport is likely one of the most impactful steps the global community can take to enable positive socio-economic transformations by mid-century. This will require urgent and bold actions from governments and businesses around the globe. We therefore urge stakeholders in the freight and logistics sectors to consult and sign on to the recently released 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗹, 𝗟𝗼𝘄-𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻, 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀: https://lnkd.in/exn-XX3J. As people of yesterday, today and tomorrow, especially in the last century and a half, we seem to be trying to exhaust the world's resources as soon as possible. It is as if we are trying to ensure that there is nothing left for the next generations, no air, no water, no bread to eat. With this awareness, we cannot ignore the organizations, groups and people who are making efforts to save the last remaining clean air, water and bread and to ensure the future of the world. One of these efforts was made this year by the "Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey". 👏 With the initiative of the "Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye", the request to declare "November 26" as “United Nations World Sustainable Transport Day,” which was brought to the agenda of the #UnitedNations by #Türkiye, was discussed and accepted at the "UN General Assembly" in New York. 👏 #TOBB had made an initiative before the relevant authorities in order to increase the appreciation and awareness of the transportation and logistics sector, which carries the entire burden of international trade, and all segments working in this sector, especially professional drivers. In this context, November 26 was declared as the "United Nations World Sustainable Transport Day" at the "UN General Assembly". Starting this year, #November26th of each year will be celebrated as the #UnitedNationsWorldSustainableTransportDay! Thank you TOBB and United Nations! 🙏 https://lnkd.in/eQ_rjVp4 #WorldSustainableTransportDay #PublicTransportBenefits UITP

The Contours of a Net Zero Emission Transport Sector in Asia https://lnkd.in/e4p2dJuS In Asia, many countries are committing to net zero emission targets. However, the decarbonization of the transport sector in Asia needs to take place in a growing transport sector with more transport infrastructure and passenger and freight activity. There is still a lack of a common understanding of the implications of the net zero transition in the transport sector in Asia. This background paper identifies the broad contours, key insights, and characteristics of the zero-emissions transport sector and the consequences for transport policy, planning, and investments. We conclude that the transport sector decarbonization in Asia will require a systemic transformation. The route to net-zero emissions in Asia involves reducing transport demand, ensuring a shift toward the most efficient travel modes, and simultaneously decarbonising vehicles and fuels. The review identifies several headwinds and tailwinds in this transition. #decarbonization #parisagreement #netzero #transport #Asia

The insights from the recent ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation) Conference show it's clear that the path to net-zero ports is not just a distant goal but a present-day action plan. Achieving net zero requires a multifaceted approach, where investments in Scope 3 emissions reporting are vital. Scope 3 encompasses all indirect emissions that occur in a port's value chain, including those from shipping and logistics. By investing in accurate reporting and reduction strategies for these emissions, ports unlock new levels of environmental accountability and performance. The discussion around Scope 3 also highlights the competitiveness factor. Ports that measure, report, and improve their Scope 3 emissions profile will not only be leaders in sustainability but will also be seen as partners of choice for businesses seeking to align with their own green mandates. As geopolitical risks escalate, ports must prioritize resilience. Part of this resilience is environmental, ensuring that ports can withstand and adapt to the changing climate and its impacts on infrastructure and operations. Investing in emissions reductions, especially in Scope 3, is part of fortifying ports against these challenges. Transparent reporting of Scope 3 emissions fosters trust and opens dialogue between ports and the broader community. It's about taking moral responsibility for the future we're crafting and providing a model for industries and sectors worldwide. CEOs, like Benoit Rochet of Port Boulogne Calais, emphasize the focus on Scope 3 emissions as a critical battlefront against climate change. Such leadership can inspire a domino effect, encouraging ports globally to harness the same commitment and drive towards comprehensive sustainability. In a time where European investment in port infrastructure is under scrutiny, it's imperative that Scope 3 emissions become a key consideration. EU's support can facilitate this transition, offering ports the financial backing and policy framework needed to take bold steps. Our colleagues Ani Matcharashvili and Stefana Sopco brought back valuable information, and we are confident the decarbonization landscape is expanding worldwide. Track and analyze emissions in and around the port to develop an actionable decarbonization strategy. EmissionInsider empowers ports to make better decisions to eliminate emissions from ships, trucks, and rail. #Scope3 #Decarbonization #Sustainability #NetZero
