Driving change, delivering solutions. This week, UITP participated in the 'Transforming Transportation' event in Washington D.C.. UITP President Renée Amilcar led the delegation, speaking during Plenary 1: Capacity, Governance, and Innovation for Implementation. 🗣 "Advocacy is one of our three key missions at UITP. We are a member-led association, and we engage with decision-makers in 100 countries on their behalf... Our cities can be more liveable, accessible and environmentally-friendly when we focus on delivering collective movement." 🚌 Public transport is a fundamental right, not a privilege. On 12 March, the UITP-COTER Policy Conference addressed one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: transport and mobility poverty. With insightful contributions from Eric Von Breska (DG MOVE), Maria Teresa Fabregas Fernandez (SG RECOVER II), Wolfgang Munch (DG REGIO), Beatriz Yordi (DG CLIMA) and other key speakers, discussions focused on the role of Social Climate Fund, Cohesion Policy, and the Recovery and Resilience Facility in addressing this issue. Public transport is essential for social inclusion, economic opportunity, and the EU’s green transition. 🤝As Thomas Wobben, Director for Legislative Works at the European Committee of the Regions, said: "Regions are closer to the citizens - Comitato europeo delle regioni has a territorial approach, UITP has a territorial approach. Better partnerships bring better results. 🌱 How is Antwerp PIONEERing sustainable commuting? 🚲 The Smart ways to Antwerp initiative is transforming urban mobility, making the city greener and more accessible. By promoting cycling, public transport, and shared mobility, Antwerp has achieved remarkable results: car use has dropped from 49% to 44% since 2018, while cycling has increased from 31% to 42%. But what’s behind its decade-long success? Beyond strong employer commitment and changing travel habits, EU-funded projects like PIONEERS Ports, where UITP is a partner, are scaling up mobility solutions, helping Antwerp – and Europe – meet its sustainability goals. 🚢 Within PIONEERS, the focus is on port commuting. Smart ways to Antwerp is addressing port employees' commutes, encouraging modal shift through cycling infrastructure, employer engagement, and multimodal solutions. 💡 Want to learn how? ✊ Happy International Women’s Day – because women should be celebrated every day, not only on 8 March! Women shape public transport, and it also relies on them. Although they are the majority of PT users, they are underrepresented in decision-making and the workforce, which must change to ensure an #InclusiveMobility system.   At UPPER, our goal is to unlock the potential of public transport and ensure it is accessible, affordable, and serves everyone equally. This also means unlocking the potential of women working in the sector.   We spoke to Annie Kortsari from the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) and Laura Babío Somoza from POLIS network, two women from our UPPER project, to hear their thoughts on how we can drive change:   💜 Gender equality isn’t just about employment - it’s about designing transport systems that work for everyone. Research shows that women and men travel differently, with different needs and safety concerns. When women are involved in decision-making, transport becomes safer, more inclusive, and more accessible.   💜 How can we ensure that women’s contributions in transport are recognised? It starts with visibility. From industry awards to mentorship programs, leadership training, and internal recognition initiatives, we need to showcase women’s achievements and ensure they are given opportunities to thrive.   💜 How does data help make change? Women’s experiences in public transport, especially safety concerns, often go unnoticed. Research projects like UPPER collect and analyse mobility data to highlight these ‘invisible voices’ and push for policies that make public transport safer and more accessible for all.   At UPPER, we believe that when women thrive, the sector thrives, and so do our cities.
