In a historic level of collaboration, community violence intervention (CVI) groups, philanthropic organizations, business leaders, and government entities recently unveiled an initiative to expand CVI programs over the next decade to significantly reduce gun violence in Chicago. The goal of the initiative, called Scaling Community Violence Intervention for a Safer Chicago, or "SC2," is to reduce shootings and homicides by half within five years and by 75 percent in a decade. "Community colleges get less government money to spend, per student, than public four-year universities: $8,695, according to the Center for American Progress, compared with $17,540. Yet community college students need more support than their counterparts at four-year universities. 29% are the first in their families to go to college, 15% are single parents and 68% work while in school. 29% say they’ve had trouble affording food and 14% affording housing, according to a survey by the Center for Community College Student Engagement." Excuse me, The PRSA Foundation… but $130,000 in relation to *what*? The Better Business Bureau’s “standard seeks to assure donors that the majority of a charity’s activities (defined as 65% of a charity’s total expenses in the past fiscal year) are directed to its program services.” Transparency is not the PRSA Foundation’s forte. Consequently, this GuideStar link to the Foundation’s IRS Form 990 filing (2021) from two years ago is the most recent one we have documenting the Foundation’s % of expenses actually dedicated to its stated “diversity” mission. In 2021, only 41% ($60,913) of total expenses ($146,700) were dedicated to grants / scholarships. In 2020, only 23% ($65,506) of total expenses ($277,233) were thus dedicated. “Other” expenses are largely used to prop up the PRSA, Inc., business league, which lost well into the seven figures in member dollars for the same time period. When I asked questions in 2020 of CFO Philip Bonaventura and then-Foundation President Joe Cohen about what was going on, I was stonewalled for months and then retaliated against. This study offers valuable insights for church leaders seeking to nurture a culture of generosity. Key Findings: •Practicing Christians have the potential to donate 3.5 times more than current levels. •Trust is a crucial factor: 76% of regular donors have high trust in their church. •Major giving obstacles: financial constraints and skepticism about fund utilization. As a stewardship consultant, I recognize that unlocking this potential requires intentional leadership. Here are three actionable steps to build trust and encourage generous giving: →Embrace Radical Transparency: Implement clear, regular financial reporting that demonstrates faithful stewardship. Help your congregation see how their generosity is making a difference in your community and beyond. →Foster Deeper Engagement: Create opportunities for meaningful dialogue about the church's vision and financial stewardship. Remember, stewardship is about more than money – it's about cultivating hearts that trust God and respond to His generosity. By focusing on these areas, we can help bridge the gap between current giving and the incredible potential that exists within our faith communities. Make a list of the issues you care about - think about challenges you'd like to help overcome 2. Use your household budget to decide how much to give 3. Donate to a mix of charities - you may want to give to both a small, local organization and a large, national or international organization 4. Beware of charity scammers- make sure your money is going to the people who you're trying to help 5. Money is not the only way to support charity - Volunteering is a great way to give back
