Prominence of European Broadcast Services via HbbTV Very happy that #AFNUM and #DIGITAL_EUROPE have recommended HbbTV to the #European_Commission as the cross-platform open technical specification to ensure the visibility of general interest services on connected TV sets. Marking a milestone for #HbbTV, the open standard has been designated as a relevant technology to support the prominence of services of general interest across Europe in a harmonised manner. AFNUM, the French alliance of digital industries, and DIGITALEUROPE, the trade association representing digitally transforming industries in Europe, have submitted observations to the European Commission in which they object to the draft regulation envisaged by the French regulator in favour of the prominence of services of general interest (SGI) on connected TV sets and other devices. Both AFNUM and DigitalEurope recommend that SGIs should be promoted through a common SGI application and advise that such an SGI application could be developed as an HbbTV application, underlining that HbbTV has the merit of being an open cross-platform specification widely available in a harmonised manner across Europe on connected TV sets. HbbTV welcomes this recognition of HbbTV by AFNUM and DigitalEurope and its ability to support a harmonised implementation across Europe in line with the objectives established by the European Audio Visual Media Services Directive (amongst other services). HbbTV specifications are developed by the HbbTV Association, a non-profit organisation in which TV manufacturers, broadcasters, network operators and technology providers cooperate to define and maintain an open specification enabling rich television services for consumers.
