Have your say on the (draft) West Northants Carer Strategy 2024-2029 West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) are asking for local carers or someone supporting a carer to share their views and feedback on the newly drafted five-year Carer Strategy which has been developed together with local carers, ensuring their voices drive forward progress over the next few years to provide the right support and information for them. 17 priorities have been identified to focus on improving over the next five years, as well as specific measurements to track progress which the Council would like to seek views on. Each priority has a set of actions that will support achieving the priority over the five-year period. Parents need more than the current case management model is able to give! It’s nobodies fault, it’s just an ineffective model. How can families be supported to come together and make a plan for a child who is at risk of coming into care? One way of doing this is through a Family Group Conference (FGC). New open access videos, produced in collaboration with Family Rights Group, explore the importance of genuine family-led decision-making in promoting a child’s welfare; the differences between family strengths-based meetings and the wide-ranging and long-standing evidence base around FGCs. https://lnkd.in/e3nZKQtM

The Fams NSW Brief to Minister Kate Washington provides important insights on the Family Preservation Framework, and where the system needs to change. It reflects many of the concerns raised in our recent engagement with stakeholders about the child protection and out-of-home care systems, which we summarise here ☛ https://lnkd.in/gQz7F2rb This insight from Fams particularly resonates with us: “Language holds immense power, and the words we choose establish the framework for everything beneath them.” The term “case worker” is an apt example of a non-relational use of language – a child is a human being, not a case! It’s why we talk about developing a new “Child Connection System”. We need more than a child protection system. When parents are choosing an organisation to work with their child, here are some of the things they can do: 1. Ask how workers interact with children 2. Ask what pre-employment checks are carried out 3. Check if the areas where children are cared for have clear lines of sight. We talk about #Transportation quite a bit because the rapid movement of people and goods during an emergency situation is vital. Unfortunately, far too many #States have inadequate #AccessibleTransportation #Resources and #Systems. Just moving about the country via #Car, #Train or #Bus is challenging for ##DisabledPeople on an average day. The situation gets worse during an #EmergencySituation. Not having #Accessible #PublicTransportation available for use by officials as a means to quickly #Evacuate the #Population means that on average 20% of the population does not have #Access to #Assistance in #Evacuating during an #Emergency. If you offer evacuation assistance to the general public but do not have accessible transportation options for ##PeopleWithDisabilities and that is not legal. We need to think about the #WholeCommunity. Even during #NormalOperations the #Disabled have a need to access transportation resources that are accessible. We are a transient society and under the #AmericansWithDisabilitiesActof1990 if #Transportation is offered to non-disabled then people living with disabilities must have access to public transportation. To not offer #EqualAccess is required. People living with disabilities have enough trouble trying to move from one place or another without worrying about accessible transportation. Our #CEO has experienced this firsthand. We cannot always control where and when an emergency situation takes place and countless times our CEO has arrived only to find no accessible public transportation modes for him to use. Most of the time when he travels he has time to plan ahead and know what accessible transportation options he will have availab
