Why did we decide to participate and sponsor the most important industry event in this particular country? ✅ India is the most populous country in the world, with a population of over 1.4 billion. ✅ Today, India is in the top five in terms of GDP (GDP in 2023 will exceed $3.5 trillion), according to expert estimates, by 2027 India could be in the top three. ✅ India is a home to the largest vegetarian community in the world. ✅ According to local entrepreneurs, demand for mushrooms in India is already 4 times greater than supply. Why did we decide to work on food and agriculture from the consumer side? Why do we need to prioritise cultural lens when discussing the culinary? What is the role of literature vis a vis culture and agriculture? We tried to answer all these and more questions while conceptualising the Indian Culinary Agenda and our potential work streams. 1. Impacting agri through food and culture In this era of technology, we have been conditioned to think of agriculture as something of a hardware issue. We believed changing a few parts, upgrading a few others and adding more and more sophistication will solve all issues. At ICA, we think of agri-food as a continuum. The FPOs and the shark tank startups are part of the same continuum. Just that some are too focused on the production side and others on the consumer side. Rarely anyone is bridging the two. 2. Why working on the consumer side is critical Consumer and consumption trends are more than just market research. Spotting and influencing trends; enabling deeper discussions about food and making the invisible supply chains visible is a critical task that we are dedicating ourselves to. 3. Merging the agendas The industry boardrooms that discuss agenda and the cultural platforms that talk about food need to be merged. From the plant to the ecology to the local cuisines to cultural artifacts built around food, it is impossible to understand and impact one without linking it to the other. The land, the producer, the input supplier, the knowledge worker and the consumer are all intertwined like the double helical structure of our cultural DNA. At Indian Culinary Agenda, we will try to unravel and understand the influences that bring it all together and what needs to change for a more self-aware and sustainable food future. One in Haryana and the other is Tamil Nadu. We lack innovation and research in the food space.
