As you plan for summer school, remember, this is a highway of opportunity to enrich the lives of students through programming and experiences that the traditional school year doesn’t allow. As a principal, I had the autonomy to plan our summer school programming for two summers and it was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my career. The community partners I was able to engage and the out of the box experiences our students participated in made ME want to be there. Summer is a great time to market and sell LEARNING to students by making it fun, exciting, and NEW. What’s important for summer 2024? Science of Reading aligned instruction, high dosage tutoring, project-based learning, experiential learning, outdoor classrooms, social emotional learning, community service projects, financial literacy, AI, STEAM!

The Basics Cobb County is Cobb Collaborative's Birth-5 programming that aims to provide fun, simple, and powerful strategies to help every child reach their full potential. Basics Principle 3 is Count, Group, and Compare. Becoming good at math begins long before a child enters school. Each one of us is born to be a “math person.” Even babies can do simple math, such as noticing amounts and patterns. Toddlers love learning math concepts, such as comparing sizes and shapes. These concepts help them make sense of the world. We can help our children learn math as we play and talk during everyday moments. Lots coming from St. Albert Impact after the adoption of our 5-year technical plan last year and the adoption today of our year 2 goals. Lots of work to do before September when we aim to move our Tier 1-3 programming to full year and remove the mid-year summer tryout. I seriously cannot get enough of these ideas- which aren’t radical but grounded in research and knowledge but which could truly upend the system that isn’t working for ANYONE. The brilliant Jill Hahn-Jakulski always had us teaching multiple subject which allowed for more wiggle room than most teachers had, I spent more time with my students and we could explore not just subjects but feelings more in depth - I can’t imagine getting to do that on a much bigger scale. #revolution #inclusivebydesign #startfresh #voiceandchoice

Did you know that I founded a pre-school called the Compton Legacy Early Childhood Academy @comptonlegacy to address early childhood literacy! Why? Because when I was a High School Principal I had many students reading below a 4th grade level and when I went to discover why it wasn’t because of their middle school teachers or even their elementary school teachers it seemed to be connected to beginning the process of learning and vocabulary extremely late. The data is clear there is a significant word gap that exist for students entering kindergarten and if that gap is not closed by the 2nd grade for many students it’s like putting them in vocab jail for their time in school. Well now we have a solution! We plan to address this problem by having my technology company @getknowlej bring learn to earn to early childhood education providing parent guardians of our babies at The Legacy with tangible rewards to go through our parent college and much more all while their child earn rewards for their future as well as short term incentives.
