One day a friend was invited by another to go to a party, when they arrived at the party they were introduced to other people and in the group someone asked these two what they did in life, what their professions were. The first responds: “I’m a car salesman.” and the other responds: “I am a salesman for the most technologically advanced automobile manufacturer, in fact the brand does not build cars, it develops cars that offer their owners unique driving pleasures…” In summary: Both are car salesmen of the same brand, but the first will continue to be a salesman and the second was recently invited to become commercial director of a dealership of the brand because the person who had asked him the question was general director of that car group. Moral: when someone asks you what you do in life professionally, try to add value to your work so that others can see your contribution to the organization you represent.

6 months into my role as a sales executive and the journey has been eye-opening! As someone with a corporate operational background, the transition has provided invaluable personal growth and skills beyond just vehicles or the motortrade industry. Looking back, my discussions with HOB's and Sales managers within the last 5 years would have been different if I knew what I know now. His role is to find potential opportunities for our UK facilities in Birmingham, West Bromwich and Malvern. Can you describe your role in 3 words? “Developer. Relationships. Growth” What does an average day look like for you? “A mix of working with new potential customers and the development of current accounts to review and explore opportunities for the business. My days generally involve phone conversations with contacts, contacting customers, listening to what is going on in the market and using social media to find out what different companies are up to.” What do you enjoy most about your job? “The pursuit of new business is really what I enjoy. Spotting the opportunities and trying to find the doorway into that customer and of course the elation of success in getting the first meeting.” What would you do if you weren’t working at Lander? “If I didn’t need to work, then I would probably spend a lot of time in the countryside, walking my dogs and spending time with my grandchildren, that will probably be what I do when I retire.” What do you do to unwind after a busy day? “I like to read a lot. Over the years, so many loyal customers have also become friends, relying on me for all of their vehicle purchases—and sometimes their vehicle sales—from the mid-90’s to today. This particular client in the review below hugged me as she left, and whispered in my ear, "YOU are the reason we keep coming back here. Thank you so much!" Another long-term client once said, "If you ever stopped selling cars, I guess we would just have to keep the vehicles we currently have indefinitely!" Building these strong relationships over hundreds of transactions, both big and small, has been incredibly heartwarming. I am so proud of the massive client base I've built here from scratch all on my own. When I started, I wasn't well-suited for a sales role at all, timidly peeking out from behind my long bangs and nervously greeting customers with a limp handshake and a tight squeak of a voice. Can you imagine??? Oiy! This occupation has forced me way out of my comfort zone which did me a world of good both personally and professionally. In the spring of 1994 I did not anticipate this “summer gig” between the spring and fall sessions of University would lead me down an entirely different path.
