March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Why do brain injuries get a whole month of recognition? Because traumatic brain injury contributes to more death and disability than other traumatic injuries (globally) & is viewed as a preventable injury. One such indication that prevention is possible is the decrease in emergency department visits for children with bicycle injuries between 2009-2018 (in the US). This document is a deep dive into Bicycle Collective's impact, programming, people, and finances for the past year. Producing the report is always a challenging yet gratifying process, because it allows our staff time to reflect back on the impact we have made in the communities we serve, the programming we have delivered, the bikes we have received as donations, and the smiles we have delivered to those most in need of a bicycle to help them get to work, school, or just get outside for a little exercise. Although the document looks back at the preceding year, it also helps us fine tune our focus on the future. What can we say about 2023 that hasn’t already been said? It was a big year of realizing long term dreams and goals, especially when we rolled open the doors in late November of our New Hub on 325 West and 900 South in Salt Lake City. As an organization, we still managed to maintain our measurable impacts across the state. No boring stuff in this report. It's an honor and privilege to serve Restorative Farms (RF), an incredible non-profit, located in the heart of South Dallas, Texas. RF is dedicated to transforming lives in a community facing significant challenges, including being designated the most impoverished in the state. Their core mission revolves around building a sustainable, economically strong, and well-managed urban farm serving as the foundation for a thriving community "agrisystem" within Dallas. This replicable model aims to address food deserts by providing residents with access to fresh, ethically sourced food. But RF goes beyond just food. They offer professional training and employment opportunities, empowering individuals, including those formerly incarcerated, to achieve financial stability and contribute to community development. The founders, Brad Boa, Tyrone Day, Doric Earle, and Owen Lynch, envision RF as a collaborative effort with the community to tackle three critical issues: - Providing healthy, affordable produce: Ensuring individuals living in food deserts have access to affordable, fresh, medical-grade food. - Boosting the local economy: Creating income opportunities for community members through farm production and sales. - Empowering the community: Equipping individuals with training, work experience, and leadership skills to break the cycle of poverty and resource depletion. RF is more than just a farm; it's a systems-based solution. They're committed to building a self-sustaining, climate-conscious, and profitable network of farms and people, all working towards a shared mission of community upliftment. Our client, John's Crazy Socks has now produced the world’s first pair of #braille socks with tactile letters. The Braille Crew Socks have the word “Inspire” written in raised braille lettering around the top band, while the braille alphabet covers each sock. John’s Crazy Socks will donate 10% from the sale of each pair of the Braille Crew Socks to the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, a Long Island-based national nonprofit that provides guide dogs, free-of-charge, to individuals who are #blind or have low vision. Holly’s design earned her a $2,500 scholarship. Holly is both blind and autistic and wanted to raise awareness about the Braille alphabet and her inspirational story.   It took the design team months to produce the three-dimensional Braille Crew Socks that accurately represented the braille alphabet. John’s Crazy Socks tested each prototype for all the features they assess in a typical sock. They also needed to make sure the presentation of the braille alphabet was accurate.
