In the third installment of our (NICE)Talks series, Giulia Bisconti, Energy Attache and Director of the Department of Energy’s USOECD Office in Paris, France, sheds light on the remarkable journey of the NICE Future initiative, celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2023. In 2017, the narrative around clean energy often omitted the crucial role of nuclear energy. Despite its capability to generate carbon-free power, contributing over half of the United States’ clean energy and more than a third globally, nuclear energy remained sidelined. Recognizing the need for unified advocacy, #NICEFuture was launched to shift nuclear energy discussions from conventional, nuclear-exclusive platforms to inclusive, cross-sectoral dialogues on clean energy at ministerial and operational levels across the world. Over the past five years, NICE Future has garnered bipartisan support, rallying leaders behind its mission to champion nuclear energy's role within the spectrum of clean energy systems. It has successfully spearheaded a global discourse, showcasing the potential and significance of nuclear energy in shaping the clean energy landscape of tomorrow. The world’s demand for energy and for the use of cleaner energy sources has led to many developments and experiments in the sector in recent years. So far, it seems clear that not all “new energies” are ready to stand on their own and if there has ever been a time when all industries in the energy sector were truly complementary, it is the present one. There has always been a different mix of energy sources available, but fossil sources are now faced with increased pressure and competition from renewable sources, nuclear and hydrogen. The exact future mix will vary depending on various factors such as geography, availability, technological developments, economics and politics. Fantastic news from the South of Scotland! #CXProject HOWEVER The region already boasts significant wind generation capacity, but there's a critical need to leverage this green energy locally. Currently, the majority is exported, leading to minimal benefits for the area. To address this, it's essential to situate energy-intensive users near the source. Despite the abundant wind energy, sectors like manufacturing lack investment. It's time for the region to fully benefit from its renewable resources. TEAM ECO stands as a champion for the South of Scotland, striving to attract jobs and manufacturing. Unfortunately, there's been little support, especially from the The Scottish Government. South of Scotland Enterprise is actively involved, yet the region remains neglected. The lack of investment appetite in the South by The The Scottish National Investment Bank is concerning. To truly become an energy powerhouse, let's explore ways to benefit ourselves and others. The issue, the people who live work, consult, contribute are not taken seriously. All the consultants and advice comes from the public sector or from. expensive consultants who have all the answers but don't understand the regional demographic dynamics. We are one of the largest employers in the region and like other main companies/employers, I've asked. No involvement or comment on the masterplan. That's a worry. Great to see CX is getting somewhere.
