This is a sign of the times that is not changing and why most projects never get built. There aren't a lot of shortcuts and why project selection is so important. Even when everything is fairly straightforward, permitting takes time and effort, particularly if assets are on government land and have first nations involved. Different than most, our flagship Santa Cruz Graphite Mine in Brazil has all the permits and licenses in hand for Phase 1 operations as well as expansion to Phases 2 & 3. Our next project in the sequence, BamaStar is on private mining claims and private property in areas that are mostly pine forests for paper and pulp industry. Our approach is to permit a small Phase 1 operation at the state level, stay out of sensitive areas and scale over time. Our operations are all modular, phased projects with scalable assets in tier 1 jurisdictions and great existing infrastructure. 🚀 Enhancing Efficiency in Mineral Processing: The Key to Sustainable Mining 🚀 In today's world, the demand for metals is immense, driven by their necessity in household and industrial applications. To meet this demand, mineral processing, especially grinding and classification, is essential. Unfortunately, these processes are currently inefficient, leading to significant mineral wastage. Addressing this issue systematically is crucial for sustainable mineral processing. The Current Scenario: Global Mineral Demand: As global demand for minerals surges, processing remaining deposits becomes more challenging due to intricate mineralogy and the need to reduce energy consumption (Mudd, 2010; Calvo et al., 2022; Magdalena et al., 2023). Inefficiencies: Current grinding and classification processes are inefficient, resulting in substantial mineral wastage and energy consumption. Key Insights: Comminution and Flotation: Historically, these processes have been studied in isolation. Comminution focuses on achieving a specific grind size, while flotation aims to maximize grades and recovery. Enhanced Liberation: Shifting from achieving a target grind size to producing a size and liberation profile that maximizes flotation recovery is crucial. Poorly liberated minerals exhibit poor flotation performance, impacting the final concentrate grade. Role of Classification: Classification's Importance: Acts as a gatekeeper, redirecting coarse particles for further comminution while sending finer particles to the flotation circuit. Integrated Approach: Few studies have optimized the classification circuit to enhance flotation outcomes, despite the clear theoretical link between classification efficiency and flotation performance. The Way Forward: Operational Excellence: Leveraging advanced mathematical modeling and efficient design of grinding and classification systems can significantly improve recovery rates and reduce energy consumption. To help fuel domestic #mining and #mineralprocessing for the #energytransition, it would be great to see action on the Interagency Working Group's recommendation to develop something like the Western Solar Plan for mining on federal lands. Working with various stakeholders, BLM and USFS should put together a plan identifying "priority areas" where proposed projects would be subject to a streamlined #permitting process because there is high development potential with minimal conflicts with #localcommunities, #wildlife, and #plants. Proactive conflict identification and mitigation can help us ramp up production to meet the demands of the #energytransition while not sacrificing #tribal and local #communityengagement and #biodiversityconservation. The IWG encourages the BLM and USFS to identify areas possessing high critical mineral resource development potential and where mineral development is less likely to result in unacceptable impacts to known competing resources. This effort can be modeled after programmatic planning efforts identifying priority areas for wind and solar development, provided additional data is collected in the location of potential mineral resources."

Recovery of Resources from Mine Waste - Cobalt The Australian company Cobalt Blue Holdings has received support from the Australian Government for its R&D on the recovery of metals from mining wastes. It launched its Waste Stream Project in 2023 (e.g. A$15 million Critical Mineral Accelerator Initiative Grant 2022). https://lnkd.in/ebVgVpWz They are in discussions with partner in Western Australia on plans to establish "a proposed large-scale, cobalt-nickel operation representing Australia’s first cobalt refinery that will produce high-quality, battery-grade cobalt sulphate that is intended for IRA-compliant markets. In this article, the statement by the Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad on the importance of a robust mine planning process being a fundamental driver of performance is telling. What was both revolutionary and an act of honour was the CEO's admittance that “............without a mine plan that works, it's very difficult to get the economic performance out of a business. And we have now set or reset the vast majority of those mine plans across the businesses to position them for pricing, operating and geotechnical realities that we face ......”. This initiative by CEO Duncan Wanblad should be the industry norm because most of the mine plans (from different mining houses) that I have personally tested for robustness have been found wanting. The "owners" of the mine plans should be encouraged to regularly test the robustness of their mine plans prior to committing such plans to external stakeholders (market). They are very few mining shafts (not even mining houses) that are currently testing the robustness of their mine plans. This mine planning phenomenon is also an oxymoron considering the amount of time and resources involved in coming up with a signed-off mine plan - which a few of the signatories believe (scientifically) in it; and the same mine plan is meant to lead us in achieving economic performance out of a business.
