Calpine, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) enter cost share agreement for Houston carbon capture demonstration   AS reported in POWER Engineering on July 8, 2024, Calpine announced that it has executed a cost share agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) for a full-scale carbon capture demonstration project at its Baytown Energy Center near Houston.   The Baytown Decarbonization Project is designed to capture 95% of CO2 emissions from two of the three turbines at the company’s Baytown Energy Facility, enabling the facility to produce electricity as well as steam for collocated industrial use. Calpine will now begin the first phase of the DOE cooperative agreement, with other phases to follow upon successful completion of phase one and finalization of plans for subsequent phases.   “We are pleased to have reached another milestone in the development of our Baytown Decarbonization Project. This initial Phase 1 commitment by the DOE will support the engineering and design of the project, further our community engagement, and advance project planning,” said Caleb Stephenson, Calpine’s Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced more than $300 million in 48C tax credits to seven hydrogen-related projects across five states. This funding is part of a broader allocation of $1.93 billion under the Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Credit to accelerate clean energy manufacturing and reduce greenhouse emissions. We're proud to highlight that Ballard Power Systems, one of our founding members, is among the recipients. Ballard is set to build a new facility in Rockwall, Texas, advancing their 'local for local' strategy with innovative, automated manufacturing processes. This new facility will greatly enhance Ballard's production capabilities, enabling them to meet increasing market demand for their zero-emission fuel cell solutions. Really interesting interview with Sheldon Kimber discussing how Intersect Power built out 2GW of generation/battery in 3 years and then a lot more since by focusing on a few large sites. I find his point on rejecting the 'Cancer of Pipeline' traditions of the industry really interesting - wasting capital on land and connections that don't get built out or provide the actual returns to investors.
