RENEWABLES RESOURCES IN 2024 It was my pleasure to be a contributor to the Packaging Insights Special Report on Renewable Resources. With low recycling rates globally, greater investment in more sophisticated mechanical and advanced recycling infrastructure is needed in 2024. Mechanical recycling is most effective with high quality, clean, sorted waste, so investment in this technology is vital. I am confident more investment will accrue to aid the move away from fossil fuels and to meet challenging sustainability targets. There is much work to be done in 2024 in all materials.

UK-based technology company CATAGEN LIMITED - a Net Zero Technologies company has made a significant milestone by becoming the first to submit a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sample to the newly established EU SAF Clearing House. This Belfast-based company is at the forefront of developing e-SAF from wind, water, and air, and bio-SAF from wind and sustainable organic waste. “Our purpose is to clean and decarbonize the air, and submitting our SAF sample to the EU SAF Clearing House gets us one step further on our roadmap to launching SAF from CATAGEN’s pioneering ClimaHtech E-FUEL GEN production model,” said Dr. Andrew Woods, Founder and CEO of CATAGEN. The ClimaHtech E-FUEL GEN technology leverages renewable hydrogen and sustainable carbon dioxide to create energy-dense liquid e-fuels. This innovative machine can produce clean fuels like SAF and e-diesel from renewable hydrogen (derived from water) and sustainable carbon dioxide (sourced from the air), powered entirely by renewable electricity. Dr. Woods emphasizes the significant economic and decarbonization opportunities this technology presents. Ricardo leads the consortium that created the EU SAF Clearing House, which includes members such as Trinity College Dublin, Intertek, Politecnico di Torino, ENVISA, and Spark Legal and Policy Consulting. This consortium is establishing a network of European and international testing facilities to guide fuel producers in assessing the environmental impacts of their products and meeting strict eligibility criteria. The EU SAF Clearing House aims to provide sustainability services for prospective fuel producers, focusing on nurturing a mature SAF supply chain in Europe. It will participate in technical events, advise on research and innovation, and promote policy coherence to advance the SAF industry.
