Had the incredible opportunity to attend the **California Mental Health Services Authority Housing Strategies Workshop** in Sacramento on September 5th, alongside many dedicated county behavioral health organizations from across the state. We were so immersed in the discussions and collaboration that I completely forgot to snap any photos – a sign of just how engaged we were! 👩🏼💻 Some of the key takeaways: - We are navigating an increasingly competitive housing market, making it more challenging to secure beds. - Fiscally sustainable facilities are vital, and maximizing space is a must to meet growing demand. - Exciting, innovative housing programs are emerging, like pet hotels to keep beloved companions out of shelters. - Important updates on Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA) that will shape future strategies. The conversations were thought-provoking, and I walked away inspired by the solutions being developed. Looking forward to seeing how these strategies unfold in our communities! Hmmm? - Why is National Minority Mental Health stricken through on this flyer? According to the organizer, Robert Lilly, he hopes to enlighten the world and help reverse the psychological concept that people of color are minorities, or small, in the world. Particularly since people of color make up the majority of the global population. He has reframed National Minority Mental Health Month into a new phraseology called Global Majority Mental Health Awareness Month. Robert Lilly is one of BMHC's patients who has publicly shared his experience with others, promoting the mission of the clinic. He is a BMHC supporter and a community activist with an amazing testimony of recovery after incarceration. He is a member of an organization called Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice (CSSJ). In recognition of the Global Majority Mental Health Awareness Month and as a member of CSSJ, Robert Lilly is organizing a recovery event in partnership with a group called Real Queens Fix Each Others Crowns. Black Men's Health Clinic will provide health resources at this event. The event will be centered on Mental Health, overcoming traumatic experiences with crime, and highlight the need to foster a community that values emotional intelligence. This interactive event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., on Sunday, July 28th at the African American Cultural and Heritage Facility, located at 912 East 11th Street in Austin. The institutional model of #LongTermCare with regimented, routinized daily life, focuses on safety, uniformity, and medical issues. This creates an environment where residents often lose their social relationships, privacy, and autonomy. Shifting towards a person-centred, holistic social care model can better support the mental health and well-being of both residents and staff. This can include: - resident-direction in care and daily activities - a home atmosphere with small, homelike units - close relationships between residents, family members, and staff - staff empowerment - collaborative decision-making and quality improvement processes What else can help create a positive social environment in long-term care?

Last week, we highlighted that YDI case management keeps over 93% of enrolled kids thriving at home in their communities. But what happens when children need more support? What happens when they need a safe, structured environment to stabilize? The graphic below tells a compelling story: a nearly 1% rise in Montana kids receiving case management services sent out of state for higher levels of care over the previous year—underscoring the urgent need to boost our in-state capacity. Residential services, like those provided through our therapeutic youth homes, act as a safety net, providing vital support. But distance from home and loved ones adds an emotional burden—amplified when kids must travel out of state to access treatment. That's why, in collaboration with our partners in behavioral health, we're working to expand capacity for children in Montana, keeping them close to home—keeping them close to family.
