A BIG milestone deserves a BIG video. 🍍
Excavation of our Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch area in Watsonia is now complete!
The 40-metre box is ready for the 2 massive TBMs to be assembled inside before they start tunnelling towards Bulleen later this year.
With Australia known for big things - learn about a few of North East Link’s. 🎥

#Tunneling | Do you know what segments are and what's their function inside the Mont Cenis base tunnel? Segments are made of concrete and used for lining the tunnels excavated with TBM. For the cross-border section of the new #LyonTurin railway line, they are produced in special sites using aggregates obtained from the excavation of the tunnel. All suitable excavation materials are transformed into concrete and then into segments.

The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is an innovative approach to tunnel construction that leverages the geological conditions and inherent strength of the surrounding rock mass to stabilize the tunnel. Developed in the 1950s, NATM emphasizes the importance of monitoring and adapting to the actual ground conditions encountered during excavation. Key features of the method include the use of shotcrete (sprayed concrete), rock bolts, and steel ribs to support the tunnel, while the deformation of the surrounding rock is carefully observed and measured. This observational approach allows for adjustments in support systems as needed, optimizing safety and cost-efficiency. NATM is particularly effective in heterogeneous and challenging geological environments, making it a widely adopted technique in modern tunneling projects.

Analysing Rockfall Hazards in Georgia 🇬🇪
Recently I have been to Tbilisi in Georgia to support our local partner Caucasus Science and Engineering LLC with analysing the hazard for rockfall at the Leghvtakhevi canyon in the centre of old Tbilisi. Together with Klaus Keilig, Dimitri Dumbadze and Zurab Menabde we have prepared a concept for rockfall mitigation using Trumer Schutzbauten rockfall protection barriers and Sigma slope stabilization mesh.
With providing this additional on site service I want to make sure that the future protection system suite perfectly to the local morphology and integrate smoothly in the rock cliffs of this touristic hotspot.
