Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonka charmed its way to the top of the North American box office on its three-day opening weekend, with an estimated $39 million in sales, according to Comscore. Wonka was also the golden ticket globally, with $53.6 million in international box office this weekend, and $92.6 million globally, for a total cumulative take of $151.4 million in 78 markets, Comscore said. For Hollywood, the weekend helped boost hopes for a strong finish to the year. Wonka is the first major release since the end of the actors’ strike, and studios and exhibitors have been targeting $9 billion in box office sales for 2023. Incredible!! This is exactly what I expected would happen for Creed the band, especially if the Texas Rangers Baseball Club reached Major League Baseball (MLB)'s World Series. Most interesting: *One performance is scheduled for Sept. 11th in Dallas. (Where the Rangers play.) ^In the social media & OTT age; one can only imagine the Media piece that can come from a performance on this date. I feel if done correctly & if you're extremely aware of what "kind of content" people are wanting these days, this tour & this performance could be part of an OTT documentary. Basically, this Sept. 11th performance could be akin to this generation's Queen @ Live Aid performance. ------------------- Currently Creed's music is building up a ton of momentum & expect that momentum to translate to ticket sales - especially if the Rangers win the World Series. (Currently, they're leading 2-1 in a best of 7.) For reference - Creed's music to sports could become a defacto sports anthem, similar to what many in India refer to 'Chak De India' the song for Indian sports. Got a hot take for y’all this morning that I have a feeling is going to ruffle feathers in the #Innovation community. But if feathers get ruffled among innovators by reading a dissenting opinion, well, I rest my case on the entire thing. So I have mixed views on this. On the one hand, it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what it is we do in our - the #Army’s and industry’s - lines of work. On the other, something about #SXSW and the massive #DoD participation in it has always rubbed me the wrong way, honestly. SXSW has far surpassed its original aim of being a meeting of minds to discuss non-mainstream arts and ideas. It has long become the very thing it was created to counterbalance - all with an utterly absurd price tag. The conference itself is easily in the thousands for a pass, and hotels in Austin during that time - forget about it. I have the same reaction to SXSW content that I do when I watch those Disney World wedding specials on tv: So. Much. MONEY. Just garish displays of MONEY it takes to participate in something like that. And because of the enormous expense of SXSW, it becomes a caste system. You either can afford it or finagle work to pay for it, or you don’t go. And if you don’t go, well, good luck ever mattering in this community…. Is that really the vibe that SXSW should be aiming for?! Was the snobby exclusivity of what SXSW has become really what they had in mind for an event that was supposed to be a salon for the alternative? Was the fruitless spectacle - the innovation theatre of it all - really what they had in mind for an event that was supposed to be a meaningful exchange of new ideas? While this whole announcement is giving Project Maven vibes that I thought we had outgrown as a society, I’m not sure this is the worst thing. The Army and the #defense industry absolutely should be present in rooms where ideas are being shared. We absolutely should be engaging in public discourse and breaking down the walls that apparently still exist between a population and its protectors. The #recruiting crisis will certainly continue if we don’t look for ways to find common ground with the community. I’m just not sure SXSW - which was never an event so much as an enabler of our worst tendencies as an agency and industry - was the right venue for that engagement.
