Fantastic conversation with Victoria Nuñez B. BSN, RN, NP-S, VWCN™ 🇧🇷🇺🇸 We spoke about navigating the hospital, challenges in nursing, advice for new RNs, and tangible solutions. Healthcare is the the largest workforce in the U.S. Although, it always had its challenges, the pandemic exposed the gaps to the public. One interesting takeaway from todays chat is more than ever nurses aren't relying on the hospital as their only stream of revenue. They're writting books, hosting podcasts, travel nursing, opening their own business and more. We can't fix the system overnight. As healthcare leadership it's crucial we recommit to our mission. However, it starts by acknowledging and discussions like this. #healthcare #travelnurse #healthcarestaffing

Is surviving in the ED a new norm? I just read this: https://lnkd.in/e7VmzS5x How terrible it is to read about "surviving in EDs", especially knowing that there is a PRACTICALLY PROVEN solution that could be implemented immediately! As a "bonus" it also significantly alleviates nurse stress and burnout as well as improves hospital margins by millions at every hospital that has implemented it. As I’ve stated in my post here, https://lnkd.in/eDiBfXmb, "NO MATTER WHAT ELSE WE DO, as long as these manmade peaks in hospital census exceed the staffing level, we are doomed to experience overcrowded EDs, nursing shortages, and artificially reduced hospital margins." There is no doubt that sooner or later, this will be understood by decision makers. The question is: How many lives and millions of dollars later? As discussed in this book https://lnkd.in/eDf9eFPk, there is a consensus among ED physicians, nurses, surgeons, anesthetists, hospital executives, patient advocates, policy makers, etc. that this intervention would significantly alleviate mortality, ED boarding and nurse burnout. The only roadblock to implementing this solution is our predilection for maintaining the status quo, thereby illustrating the quote "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." This is another illustration of the urgency for this book's message to be heard; many lives depend on it. The alternative is to CONSIOUSLY ignore this intervention and continue business as usual, while regularly and INCONSEQUENTIALLY express our dissatisfaction with the dreadful status quo. The choice is ours. #AARP #hospitalovercrowding #nurseburnout #physicianburnout #healthcare #nurseburnout #qualityofcare #healthcarestaffing #staffingshortages #burnoutprevention #patientmortality #patientcare #patientexperience #healthcareleadership #changemanagement #nurse #hospital #hhs #cms #nhs #ministryofhealth #hospitalmanagement #patientsafety #emergencydepartment #nursestaffing #nursingshortage #healthcarequality #cnn #msnbc #healthcarejournalism #journalism #investigativereporting #newyorktimes #washingtonpost

Insightful article in Crain's Cleveland Business about the workforce shortages facing our hospitals here. Featuring hospitals in the University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic health systems, it looks at the ongoing need for healthcare workers and the challenges facing our region's caregivers, particularly nurses. This is a major issue for the whole country, but especially for Cleveland, where studies predict healthcare will be a fast-growing sector in the coming years. We owe it to our caregivers to give them the support they need, and to ensure our hospitals are fully staffed. Glad to see this issue getting attention from Crain's! https://lnkd.in/eDMiWN_U

Facing ongoing workforce challenges, SSM Health is leveraging ShiftMed's W-2 on-demand model to create a more stable, sustainable staffing solution. In a recent HealthLeaders article, Jennifer Garnica, RN, BSN, MHA, VP of Nursing and CNO at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, shared how this approach has converted over 100 on-demand nurses into full-time staff, significantly improving nurse retention while saving on costly external agency contracts. By focusing on local workforce solutions, SSM Health has not only reduced its reliance on travel nurses but also stabilized its workforce, leading to improvements in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and overall patient experience. Additional benefits include enhanced morale, loyalty, longevity, and cost savings in recruiting and onboarding. Director of Business Development and Government Relations at Midway Specialty Care Center (MSCC) Infectious Disease Specialists | Executive Board Member at Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade
Nurses at the Miami VA Medical Center, along with colleagues across the country, are protesting what they call a national hiring freeze. They argue this freeze, combined with planned job cuts, is creating critical staffing shortages that jeopardize veterans' access to quality healthcare. The National Nurses United claims a nationwide hiring freeze has led to tens of thousands of vacancies, including nurses. The VA denies a freeze, stating they are strategically hiring based on need. They point to a 14% increase in nurses at the Miami VA and historically low turnover rates. However, the Inspector General Report reveals that while the VA health system has more staff this year than last, there are still critical shortages, particularly in psychology, practical nursing, and psychiatry. An expected $15 billion budget shortfall has led the VA to announce plans to cut 10,000 jobs across the system. Nurses are concerned about: lack of investment in staffing, leading to burnout and compromised care; outdated facilities with issues like malfunctioning AC units; and the impact of job cuts on veterans' access to essential services. This situation highlights the ongoing struggle to balance veterans' healthcare needs with budgetary constraints, creating a complex issue with no easy solution. #VAstaffingcrisis #veteranshealth #nursesprotest #healthcare #budgetcuts
