Founded in 2004, Higher Heights Youth Empowerment Programs, Inc. is a state-wide college access organization that promotes equal access and opportunities for under-represented college bound student to obtain a post-secondary education in Connecticut.  Our goal is to increase college readiness, participation and completion in Connecticut among low-income students, first-generation college-going students and students of color.Each year HHYEP has had 100% high school graduation rate, 100% college acceptance rate, and 80% parent involvement rate. Higher Heights has personally employed over 95 youth, 100% have graduated from high school, 95% have enrolled into college receiving over $10 million in scholarships and grants.  The mission of HHYEP is to change the lives of under-represented college bound students to EMPOWER, ENCOURAGE, and EQUIP them to obtain a post-secondary education. Highlighting an opportunity to support the Boston Collegiate Charter School, a historic Boston school focused on preparing students from all backgrounds for college. Since their first graduating class in 2004, 100% of Boston Collegiate's diploma-earning seniors have been accepted to four-year colleges, and 75% have earned a degree or are persisting toward one. BCCS students achieve these high rates with the help of the Edward M. Kennedy Scholarship Fund, which supports graduates pursuing degrees by covering tuition and living expenses. One of the things that stands out to me in this report is the fact that financial aid represents 39.2% of gifts to endowment and just 9.9% of gifts to current operations. After spending significant time this week talking with two university clients about the importance of financial aid to their finances and to their campaign goals, I am thinking about how this reality may need to be better reflected in our institutions' financial plans and if we need to be rethinking gift opportunities for financial aid to inspire more spendable gifts.

Be Like Mike: Michael R. Bloomberg, the billionaire and former New York City mayor, has set a new benchmark for philanthropic support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with his historic $600 million donation to the country's four leading Black medical schools. This unprecedented investment will have a generational impact, significantly bolstering the endowments of institutions like Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, and our member institution Morehouse School of Medicine - all of which play a crucial role in educating a disproportionate share of Black doctors in the United States. Everyone with the means to do so should strive to be like "Mike" - to leverage their resources in service of creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive society. Must read report from Giving Gap and Heather Infantry on the state of black-founded nonprofits today. * Black leaders reported being deeply involved in their organization's daily operations. * Black leaders have personal experience related to their nonprofit's mission, fueling their commitment toward the organization's causes. * Founder's primary motivation for their work is passion and belief in the mission, followed by lived experience. * Passion and commitment don't pay the bills, many Black leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints. *The top need identified is financial support for general operations. These reasons and others are why our San Jose Giving Circle has focused on the BIPOC-led proximate organizations in our neighborhoods. We have funded some extraordinary black-led nonprofits (fiscally sponsored projects) which face the challenges outlined above. These organizations include Parenting with a Purpose, Muindi Foundation, and PARTI Program founded by Colette Choates, Nyla Choates, Winston Ashby, Serena M., and Tim Muindi.
