Did you know that August is #BreastfeedingAwarenessMonth? At South Shore Health, we're proud to support breastfeeding moms with an expert, compassionate team of International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants, more commonly known as IBCLCs. Our IBCLCs, not all of whom are pictured here, care for patients at South Shore Hospital and South Shore VNA: ➡️ At the Hospital, IBCLCs consult with clinical teams and patients in a number of settings, including on our Mother-Infant Unit, in the Emergency Department, on our inpatient floors, and in our Messina Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). ➡️ In a Home Care setting, our South Shore VNA IBCLCs offer one-on-one support and encouragement to patients in the comfort of their homes. Along with serving as a resource to both breastfeeding moms and their fellow caregivers, our IBCLCs are expert educators, running our Lactation Support Group and responding to questions on our Warm Line. Check out this blog post I wrote a while back. Thank you to the members at #thebridgedirectory for featuring my work. Here is a preview: Breastfeeding is often seen as a life-affirming and nurturing act, a natural extension of the bond between parent and child. In the context of perinatal palliative care, where a baby is born with a life-limiting condition, breastfeeding can take on an even deeper significance. While the circumstances are heart-wrenching, the choice to breastfeed can provide comfort, connection, and a sense of purpose to both the baby and the birthing parent. This blog post will explore the benefits of breastfeeding in these situations, offer practical advice on making breastfeeding wishes known through an advanced birth plan, and provide guidelines for healthcare providers, doulas, and lactation consultants to support parents during this difficult time. Some states are better than others at providing equal breastfeeding promotion and protection across racial groups. This map shows the states with breastfeeding initiation rates that are 15% (or more) LOWER for Black moms and babies compared to white moms and babies. Wisconsin comes in with the greatest difference (Black initiation rate: 53.8 % v. white initiation rate 86.6%). Many of these states also have other indicators reflecting the current crisis for Black maternal health and infant health, like high perinatal mortality rates and high rates of chronic disease. Breastfeeding has significant positive outcomes for infant and maternal health. It is imperative to support Black maternal and infant health in these states. Providing high level breastfeeding support is an excellent way to improve outcomes for Black families. #marginalized Stay tuned - next week I will highlight all the states that have higher breastfeeding initiation rates for Black mothers and babies compared to white mothers and babies. Breastfeeding is not just a personal choice; it's a cornerstone of infant health and maternal well-being. This week, we highlight why spreading awareness about breastfeeding is crucial. It’s more than nourishing a baby; it's about ensuring every mother has access to the support, education, and resources she needs. Breastfeeding reduces infant mortality, lowers the risk of chronic diseases, and fosters stronger mother-child bonds. Yet, many mothers face barriers that prevent them from fully embracing this natural practice. By raising awareness, we can help dismantle these obstacles, normalize breastfeeding, and support every mother in her breastfeeding journey. Join us in advocating for a world where breastfeeding is celebrated and supported. Let’s create an environment where every mother feels empowered to make the best choices for her and her baby. #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #BreastfeedingAwarenes #MedicalBilling #HealthcareManagement #Medkarma #RCM #healthcare #revenuecyclemanagement #revenuecycle #rcm #growth #physicians #physicianbilling #billingexperts #DME #dmeservices #dentalbilling #dentalcare #dentalservices #dmebilling #medicalbilling #medicalbillingservices

Help us celebrate World Breastfeeding Week and improve Access To All. We are offering our course Primary Care Breastfeeding Support: The First Weeks to all health care practioners who sign up during World Breastfeeding Week: https://lnkd.in/g_P_8Z7A Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) serve as the primary care medical home for many underserved families. By design, FQHCs provide services to families with limited access to health care and a high proportion of families. One study found that 1 in 10 families at FQHCs experience social risk factors including food, housing and financial insecurity. Given disparities in breastfeeding rates and the variability in access to breastfeeding support, we see FQHCs as key players in the efforts to improve access to all. In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week we are offering 50% OFF our course Primary Care Breastfeeding Support: The First Weeks to providers at FQHC's! The Integral Role of IBCLCs in Hospital Settings 📊🏥 In hospitals, IBCLCs are not just lactation consultants; we are key players in maternal and child health. Our roles include: 🔹 Immediate Postpartum Support: Facilitating initial breastfeeding sessions to establish breastfeeding patterns. 🔹 Staff Training: Educating medical staff on best practices in lactation support. 🔹 Ongoing Consultation: Providing continuous support to address any breastfeeding issues that arise during the hospital stay. 🌍 World Breastfeeding Week: Empowering Mothers, Supporting Health 🌍 At the European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP) and Young EAP, we join the World Health Organization call for trained health professionals to provide respectful and helpful breastfeeding support. We also believe paediatric healthcare professionals should be actively involved in shaping recommendations and guidelines about infant and young child feeding. 🤱When mothers receive the support they need to breastfeed their babies, everyone benefits. Breastfeeding offers immense public health benefits, reducing the risk of infections, and chronic diseases. However, the WHO European region has some of the lowest breastfeeding rates globally. It's time to change that. 🧑⚕️Paediatricians and healthcare professionals must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to support breastfeeding. Implementing the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (#BFH) and ensuring proper training can halp to make a difference! 📣Join us in advocating for better breastfeeding support and training! Together, we can #PrioritizeChildAndAdolescentHealth and ensure healthier futures for children across Europe and beyond. #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #BreastfeedingSupport #EAPaediatrics #ProtectFutureGenerations European Commission European Parliament UNICEF International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS) WHO Regional Office for Europe
