Research shows that internships significantly increase women's chances of securing full-time employment, especially in fields like STEM. SPP is proud to join the Women's Foundation of Arkansas as an employee partner of The Tjuana Byrd Summer Internship Program. By supporting such initiatives, companies can help create a more equitable workforce and foster long-term career growth for women. For their April Information Crusade, ITE's Women in ITE focuses on maximizing #internship opportunities. As the summer months are quickly approaching, so will an influx of students as they enter the workforce through an internship position. The Women in ITE Subcommittee wanted to be a resource for upcoming interns to hopefully ease the transition from student to employee and provide advice for those anxiously awaiting the opportunity to grow and excel in their potential field. Every company or organization will be different when it comes to an internship, as some may have a more formalized program with potentially hundreds of interns or the other side of the coin where you may be the sole intern at your company. There is not a one-size-fits-all scenario for an internship and at the end of the day, your experience will be what you make of it. As the end of the summer nears, many college students will be wrapping up their internships. According to various studies, only about 47% of them were paid. Unpaid internships reflect a huge inequity issue in our country. A National Association of Colleges and Employers 2021 study indicated that women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation college students were underrepresented in paid internships compared to their white, male, non-first-gen counterparts. If you are in a position to advocate for a #PaidInternship at your place of employment, feel free to use this position paper by NACE to help you make your case: https://lnkd.in/eBXeKgPT What was your own #internship experience? #MakeYouThinkThursday

Research shows that first-generation students are less likely to have internships or complete them in person compared to their continuing-generation peers. Similarly, female students are also less likely to secure paid internships than their male peers. To increase availability of internships for minoritized groups, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s undergraduate division created a microinternship and mentoring program for low-income, first-generation, or underrepresented minority students. https://ow.ly/50JZ50Qvtok

Another thought for #Childlifeinternship coordinators in the week before #OFFERWEEK: As a faculty member at #BankStreetCollegeofEducation, I assist students in preparing for fieldwork and internships. In the past, I have advised them that hospital Child Life teams look for a "good fit" when evaluating potential candidates. However, in light of the growing awareness of racial and ethnic diversity disparities within our field and the unique needs of neurodivergent learners, I am questioning whether this approach is still appropriate. In our polarized world, barriers are broken down when we open ourselves to different points of view, backgrounds, language styles, and temperaments. Maybe the next best intern isn't the one who fits in, but the one who challenges your team to grow and engage in courageous conversations. Please consider this while making your final decisions about what is good for your team.
