VIDEO. It may not occur to most people that when they are going out and networking and meeting lots of people, one of the things they are doing is scouting. And you can scout for many different things, people and companies in evolving and new technologies, industries, like minded thinkers, clients, donors, investors, or what have you. Change your thinking and change you life, or and your business. Scouts exist in sports, in space exploration, and in business like real estate, recruiters searching for talent, agents, brokers, but a lot of businesses don't know how to scout or use scouting. NASA understands it very well. Plus NASA has changed its mission from safe slow missions (and playing it safe) to high risk - high reward missions. There's a lesson there.

I was looking forward to the #IAC2024 conference which is a huge event in my field and am again extremely disappointed to note that the International Astronautical Federation have set an arbitrary age limit of 35 for full time student entry fees As a mature PhD student and career changer on exactly the same bursary as my younger peers, I will now be asked to pay somewhere in the region of 1500 Euros for attendance compared to the 260 Euros asked of my colleagues. No doubt I'll be outside the range for reduced accommodation rates too when that information gets released as was the case last year. Clearly that difference isn't going to be covered by my limited research grant funds. Taken together this places a real restriction on my attendance and, as a full time student, I feel it is is frankly unjustifiable and explicit ageism. I was also planning to prepare and submit an abstract, and last year the student competition had an age limit of 28 for no reason I can see. The UK element of that competition is delivered by the British Interplanetary Society and I'll be interested to see what if any representations were made on this issue this year and if that limit is still in place. I have repeatedly engaged with these organisations and am frankly either totally ignored or told "it's not our decision" and brushed off. I'm posting this publicly now as I feel that organisations that profess a mantra of equality and inclusivity but are utterly deaf to their own exclusionary practices should be highlighted and challenged, especially when they refuse to engage via any other medium.
