This Space Warfighter Talk features a conversation between Greg Gillinger from the Space Force Association and Kristin B., a China space expert at the China Aerospace Studies Institute (CASI). Kristin discusses her background and expertise in researching China's space program. She emphasizes the value of unclassified research and how it can complement classified information. She also highlights the importance of transparency in attributing behaviors in space. The conversation then dives into details about China's space program. Kristin talks about a specific Chinese satellite, SJ-17, which maneuvered close to foreign satellites, including those from Russia and India. She argues that this close approach could signify that China is developing counter-space capabilities. The video concludes with Kristen mentioning resources on the CASI website, including a translated version of a PLA training manual on space operations. On Khaleej Mag, I recently wrote about the trend of space militarization and space wars in the light of recent events. "The Pentagon’s latest actions underscore this trend. With powers like China and Russia making tremendous advances in space-based operations, the United States is responding by creating extensive capabilities for potential space warfare. This entails deploying a new generation of ground and space-based technologies to protect American satellites and, if necessary, destroy enemy spacecraft" Global dialogue and space preservation are the way forward. "This vision of space as holy and free of violence highlights the urgent need for global dialogue and solid efforts to prevent space militarization." #SpaceSustainability #SpaceDiplomacy #SpaceWarfare

Beyond the security and defense necessities satellites and space represent there are major opportunities and a necessity for global collaboration. In the coming decade, I would consider the two main ones being the replacement of the International Space Agency and the development of settlements on the moon. Here too there is a need to work with friends and allies, as friendships on Earth tend to extend to space. This is why we see geopolitics moving toward what is now called “astropolitics. https://lnkd.in/eBjTez_W

An exciting announcement from Orbit Fab! Orbit Fab has just achieved a major milestone! The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command (SSC) has officially designated Orbit Fab’s RAFTI (Rapid Attachable Fluid Transfer Interface) as the standard for in-space refueling of military satellites. This landmark achievement marks a significant leap forward in space technology! The RAFTI refueling port is set to revolutionize satellite operations by making in-space refueling a reality. This innovation will not only extend the lifespans of satellites but also enhance their mission capabilities. While it supports critical military objectives, RAFTI also opens the door to exciting commercial possibilities in space. Check it out, #spaceentrepreneurs: "The United States is leading the world into a new era of space activity known as the third space age. Unlike the militarization and exploration of the first space age (1957–90) and the diversification and stagnation of the second space age (1991–2015), the third space age (2016–present) is defined by rapid commercialization and proliferation. In this new era, US space capabilities and capacity are second to none, but #China, #Russia, and other nations are actively working to erode this advantage. This report provides quantitative insights and analysis of the trends in space launch, satellites, and space debris and makes recommendations for how to build an enduring advantage for the United States in space." I agree with Todd Harrison's definition of the third space age, but would add that it is becoming even more militarized than the first space age, which I would characterize as more geopolitical than military. #newspace #DOD #spaceeconomy Peter Garretson Namrata Goswami M.V. More than 400! 🛰 China has launched more than 400 satellites since their last United Nations Registration of Space Objects submission. China's last submission was made on 5 June 2023 (ref graphic) and covered objects launched through the end of 2022. So what's the big deal? The US space object catalog (made public via space-track.org and secondary distribution sources such as Celestrak) is the de facto "truth source" for worldwide objects on orbit via the assigned international designators, which is the identity used for the UN registration treaty. With such a high submission latency, China can monitor what objects the US tracks via the US catalog. What if there is a clandestine PRC satellite? Well, if we haven't found it, perhaps they are not inclined to submit it for registration(?). In fact, given the 22 month delay, such a satellite could have already completed a mission and re-entered. Encouraging to hear senior United States Space Force officers addressing space domain camouflage, concealment, and deception. 🇺🇸 𝙓-37𝘽 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙡 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙪𝙫𝙚𝙧 The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV-7) will begin executing a series of novel maneuvers, called aerobraking, to change its orbit around Earth and safely dispose of its service module components in accordance with recognized standards for space debris mitigation. Since December 28, 2023, the United States Space Force, supported by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, has conducted radiation effect experiments and has been testing Space Domain Awareness technologies in a Highly Elliptical Orbit. The use of the aerobraking maneuver- a series of passes using the drag of Earth's atmosphere- enables the spacecraft to change orbits while expending minimal fuel. Once the aerobrake maneuver is complete, the X-37B will resume its test and experimentation objectives until they are accomplished, at which time the vehicle will de-orbit and execute a safe return as it has during its six previous missions. #Space #Military #UnitedStatesSpaceForce
